Chapter Ninety: Hulk
At first light the next morning, Li Yiyi burst into Wang Jing’s room clutching a laptop.
“Boss, they’ve moved.”
Wang Jing looked at the image on the screen. A large force of soldiers had surrounded Bruce Banner.
Under the barrage of heavy fire, the Hulk was forced to raise his arms to defend himself. Just as he was about to break through the front line, General Ross, standing in the rear, sent in two Humvees.
Unfortunately, the two vehicles did nothing to suppress him. If anything, they became weapons the Hulk used against the surrounding troops.
He kicked one Humvee over and hurled it at the soldiers nearby, then ripped the engine out of the mangled wreck and flung it as if it were a stone, smashing it into the Humvee beside it.
The struck vehicle erupted in a violent explosion. The flames and shockwave scattered the soldiers’ formation.
Seeing this, Wang Jing immediately stood up and said to Li Yiyi, “Hold him off and keep me updated on his position in real time.”
“Got it, Boss!”
Wang Jing put on his powered exoskeleton and flew out.
Naturally, Jarvis noticed this as well.
“Sir, I’ve just detected a suit of armor taking off from the Evelyn Hotel,” Jarvis said to Stark, who was in the middle of assembling the Mark Four.
Stark lifted his head from the magnifying lens. “Jarvis, get my armor ready. This time I’m going to find out exactly who he is.”
“Mr. Stark, using the armor will accelerate the accumulation of palladium in your body,” Jarvis reminded him.
“I know. I don’t need you to remind me. Do as I say.”
“Yes, Mr. Stark.”
Soon Wang Jing discovered Iron Man rapidly closing in on him.
Before long, Stark had maneuvered his armor to catch up and fly alongside him.
Wang Jing saw the other man point downward. The meaning was obvious: he wanted Wang Jing to go down.
Wang Jing switched on the radio. “Sorry, I’ve got things to do today. We can talk next time.”
“No. Today, and only today,” Stark said sternly. “You broke into my server and stole so much data. You’re not going anywhere today.”
“I think you’ve misunderstood something. I didn’t steal anything from your servers.”
“You’re wearing my technology right now. What more do you have to argue?”
Hearing Stark say that, Wang Jing immediately dove downward.
Stark, following close behind, smiled with the satisfaction of a plan coming together.
The two landed in an open clearing. Wang Jing lifted his helmet and looked at Tony Stark, who had just landed after him.
“Say it. What do you want with me? Don’t bring up the data. You know very well what’s going on,” Wang Jing said with a frown.
Tony Stark, having also retracted his helmet, looked at Wang Jing with arrogant composure. “Honestly, seeing your face is still a surprise.”
“If I didn’t know you were about to die, I’d have punched your head clean off already,” Wang Jing said flatly.
“Who told you I’m going to die? Right now is my finest hour!” Tony Stark spread his arms confidently.
Hearing such narcissistic words, Wang Jing let out a cold laugh. “Was that what you were thinking when you were drinking chlorophyll?”
At that, Stark’s expression sank at once. “So that email really was from you.”
“That’s right. Well? Want to think it over?”
“No need. I can handle it myself,” Stark said with indignant pride.
“Perfect. I don’t have time today anyway.” With that, Wang Jing closed his helmet and prepared to fly on toward his destination, but Stark stopped him.
“What exactly is it you need? Maybe I can help.”
“Not necessary. I can deal with it myself.”
And with that, he took off again.
Left behind, Stark cursed in regret. “Damn it, I should have said yes!”
Watching the tiny light streak away into the distance, Stark had no choice but to shut his faceplate and fly back.
Because of his energy limits, Wang Jing flew slowly. After two hours of traveling, guided by Li Yiyi, he finally found the Hulk sheltering from the rain beneath a cliff face, along with his girlfriend, Betty Ross.
Wang Jing flew slowly toward the overhang. Hearing the sound, the Hulk and Betty Ross both looked over in alarm.
The Hulk let out a warning roar toward Wang Jing in the air.
“Easy, both of you. I mean no harm,” Wang Jing said, opening his helmet and raising both hands.
“You’re Tony Stark. Iron Man,” Betty Ross asked uncertainly.
“Sorry, I’m not Tony. I’m with the United Government,” Wang Jing replied.
As soon as Betty Ross heard he was from the government, she grew tense.
Seeing this, Wang Jing hurriedly tried to reassure her. “You’ve got it wrong. I’m not one of your father’s men, and we’re not here to hurt you.”
“Even so, we’re not going with you,” Betty Ross said firmly. The Hulk beside her gave a low, thunderous roar in agreement.
“I know. Your world’s governments want to study the Hulk and mass-produce super soldiers, just like your father.”
“Our world?” Betty Ross caught the key point in his words.
“That’s right. I’m not from this world. You can think of it as a parallel world,” Wang Jing explained.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I can take you to my world.” Wang Jing held out his hand.
Betty Ross hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “But I’m taking Banner with me.”
“No problem.” Wang Jing agreed without hesitation.
He slowly descended onto the cliff wall. Looking up at the green-skinned giant, Wang Jing smiled and greeted him, “Hello, Hulk.”
The Hulk responded to the gesture with a disdainful snort.
Wang Jing smiled, then extended one hand toward Betty Ross. “Take my hand.”
Betty Ross placed her hand in his, and Wang Jing reached out with his other hand, resting it lightly against the Hulk, then activated the crossing.
The sudden change in scenery left Betty Ross stunned. The Hulk, meanwhile, looked around in alarm, fully braced for battle at the sight of the fully armed soldiers.
“Hulk, calm down. They won’t attack you. No one here will attack you,” Wang Jing reassured him.
Then Wang Jing gestured to the surrounding troops in powered exoskeleton armor to withdraw. At first, the soldiers hesitated, but after Song Guohua gave the order, they filed out in neat ranks.
Only after every soldier had left did the Hulk finally begin to relax.
Seeing his emotions steady, Wang Jing asked, “Hulk, do you still want to keep living like this, being hunted every single day?”
“Hulk does not want!” the Hulk answered in a deep, rumbling voice.
“Then let Banner come back. We need to discuss staying in this world,” Wang Jing said gently.
At Wang Jing’s words, the Hulk shrank back like a child being called home by his mother for dinner, disappearing with great reluctance.
Wang Jing had seen the Hulk turn back into a human many times before, but this was the first time witnessing it in reality. Even for someone like him, who could cross between realms, it still felt incredible.
