Chapter Eighty-Eight: The S.H.I.E.L.D. Bureau
Early in the morning, Ada Wang arrived before Stark Tower disguised as a polished office worker here to interview for a job.
No sooner had she entered the building than Happy, who was on duty, stopped her. “Hey! Where’s your ID badge? Put it on, or how am I supposed to know what you do, who you are?”
“Sorry!” Ada Wang displayed the polished acting skills of a seasoned agent. A trace of panic crossed her face as she took the badge the receptionist had just given her from her pink handbag and deliberately pinned it to her proud, upright chest.
That sight made Happy glance at her a few more times, and whatever annoyance he had felt vanished in an instant. After all, who would make things difficult for a smoking-hot beauty? Women excluded, of course.
Then Ada Wang leaned forward slightly, letting a hint of cleavage show to draw Happy’s attention, and said, “Sorry, this is my first time at Stark Industries.”
Happy looked dazed for a moment, then, as the head of security, quickly came to himself and glanced at the name tag on her chest. “You’re here for an interview?”
“Yes, I’m here to interview for the position of executive assistant,” Ada Wang said with a smile.
Happy silently pitied her for a moment, then nodded. “Then good luck. The interview is in the CEO’s office on the top floor.”
“Thank you.” Ada Wang bowed slightly again, smiled her thanks, and stepped into the elevator just as it happened to open.
Before the doors closed, she even waved at Happy, looking every inch the novice just entering the workforce.
Once the elevator doors shut, Happy turned away with a sigh, lamenting the fate of another flower about to be trampled by a boorish pig.
After that, he resumed reminding every employee who entered the building to wear their badges.
Inside the elevator, Ada Wang took out a compact mirror and lipstick to freshen her makeup, making herself look even more alluring so she could create opportunities for the mission ahead.
Soon the elevator chimed and reached the top floor. By then, with vivid lipstick on and a black ribbon tied at her neck, she was as seductive as she was mysterious. An outfit like that was lethally effective on men of this era, enough to make even Wang Jing, a man who had lived two lives, go momentarily dazed.
Let alone Tony Stark, whose fashion sense was still stuck in the year 2007.
But after Ada Wang knocked on the CEO’s door, she discovered that her carefully planned seduction had nowhere to use its power, because sitting in the CEO’s office was Tony Stark’s personal assistant, Pepper Potts.
When Pepper Potts looked up and saw Ada Wang’s attire, she too could not help but freeze for a moment.
“Who are you?”
“Hello, I’m here for an interview. You must be Tony’s assistant, Miss Potts!”
“Yes. I didn’t expect you to arrive this early.” As she spoke, she searched through a stack of files on her desk and found the interview list.
“Sorry, what was your name?” Pepper Potts asked while continuing to sort through the documents.
“Oh, my name is Ada Wang. I was born in China and graduated with a major in business administration from an Ivy League university.” Ada Wang said with a confident smile.
At the same time, a tiny steel bead used as a decoration slipped from the surface of her handbag, rolled down her smooth, firm, pale thigh, and dropped to the floor.
While Pepper Potts and Ada Wang were talking, it quietly rolled off to the side, stopping beside a miniature model of the Stark Expo, then climbed up the desk leg and hid inside one of the model buildings.
Meanwhile, under Ada Wang’s subtle guidance, their conversation shifted from the interview to makeup and skincare, growing increasingly animated.
But just as they were chatting merrily, a secretary knocked and came in from outside to remind them, “Miss Potts, the interviewees are all here!”
“Oh! All right, we’ll be done shortly,” Pepper replied with a nod.
“Uh, it was nice meeting you today. We’ll send you the details later,” Pepper Potts said with a smile.
“Okay, then I’ll wait for your good news.” Ada Wang also stood up, shook Pepper Potts’s hand with a smile, and walked out with effortless grace.
Though there had been a minor change of plans, the mission had still been carried out smoothly. All that remained was to wait until nightfall, when the tiny Transformer hidden inside the model would scan the entire Stark Expo miniature and send the data to Li Yiyi.
Everything was going so smoothly, right up until she passed Natasha, who was also pretending to be there for an interview, on her way out.
As top-tier spies, the two of them recognized each other’s identities almost at the same moment.
Smiling, they exchanged polite nods, each working hard to maintain the role she was playing.
After leaving Stark Tower, Ada Wang did not return directly to the hotel. Instead, she took a long detour, and before long she realized she was being followed.
After spending more than ten minutes shaking them off, she finally returned to the hotel.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who had been thrown off her trail could only report back helplessly. “Director, we lost her!”
At S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, inside the Triskelion, the one-eyed black director, Nick Fury, frowned when he received the message from his agents below.
“Hill, have you found the woman’s identity?” Nick Fury asked, staring at the surveillance footage of Ada Wang on the screen.
“We found something, but the information is clearly false.” A detailed file appeared on Nick Fury’s computer.
“Ada Wang, Chinese, entered the country as a tourist?”
“That’s right, yet today she actually went to Stark Tower for an interview.”
“Pull every camera in the area, find her, and tell Natasha to be careful lately!” Nick Fury said.
“Yes, Director!”
“What about Doctor Banner now?” Nick Fury asked next.
“He only got back to the United States yesterday, and now he’s on his way to see his little girlfriend,” Hill said, bringing up the file.
“Good. Keep an eye on him. If Ross captures him, move in immediately and take over.”
“Director, are you sure you don’t want to warn General Ross? If the Hulk transforms in the city, it will be a disaster.” Hill asked.
“He knows it himself; there’s no need for us to remind him. And if he makes a terrible mistake, wouldn’t that mean one less enemy for us?” Nick Fury said shrewdly.
Hearing that, Hill at his side could only roll her eyes helplessly.
As though sensing her thoughts, Nick Fury turned to her and said with earnest gravity, “Commander Hill, to become an excellent commander, you need more than superb battlefield leadership. You must also possess deep strategic insight!”
“Yes, Director.” Hill nodded humbly, taking the lesson to heart.
“The tests for the flying aircraft carrier are already complete. I’m going to appoint you as deputy captain,” Nick Fury said.
“Oh! Thank you, Director!” Hill said in surprise and gratitude.
“You’ve earned it.”
“Has the spacecraft in Antarctica been confirmed?”
“It’s confirmed. It’s the plane Captain America used to fly!” Hill replied.
“Good. Then accelerate the search.”
“Don’t worry. With Kelsey on it, no one is more enthusiastic than he is!”
“Ha. Tell him to calm down. Everything is to be done step by step,” Nick Fury said with a smile.
“All right, though I think he’ll know how to keep his head about it,” Hill said, smiling as well.
“Never underestimate a fan’s determination, especially an old fan.”
