Chapter 111: The Target—An Elder of the Purification Sect (Part 1)
“Little Blood Bank, come again sometime~”
Ming Rourou leaned against the doorway of her room, her body and the doorframe forming a perfect curve. Then she gave Wu Zui a delicate wave, looking so alluring that even the patrolling spirit investigators were left staring blankly.
“Boring!”
Wu Zui shot her a glance before returning to his room and closing the door.
The flight Wu Zui had booked departed as early as he had risen, so after returning to his room and pulling along his suitcase, he headed straight for Yanjing City Airport.
As a spirit investigator, he naturally carried quite a few weapons whenever he traveled abroad. Thus, security merely verified his identity and did not inspect his belongings. Wu Zui soon boarded the plane through the express channel.
That was one of the privileges enjoyed by spirit investigators. If he had only been an awakened one, he would never have received such treatment.
As for Wu Zui’s suitcase, it was sent to the cargo hold because it exceeded the weight limit. He was not surprised. He had brought quite a few special weapons for dealing with the elders of the Pure World Society, and the larger ones were all in the suitcase. Its being overweight was perfectly understandable.
Once he reached his seat, Wu Zui put on an eye mask and prepared to rest for a while. The flight to the El Nation would take six hours, giving him plenty of time to catch up on sleep.
At that moment, in the aircraft’s cargo hold, someone’s suitcase suddenly opened a crack by itself. Through the gap, a pair of bright, enormous eyes could be seen blinking as their owner snickered mischievously.
“Heehee~ Master is so stupid~”
Because he had risen early, Wu Zui was sleeping deeply. Before long, however, he felt someone pat him on the shoulder.
“Slurp… Have we arrived?” Still groggy, Wu Zui wiped the drool from the corner of his mouth and asked instinctively. He thought Xiao Ke’ai was fooling around again.
“Buddy, you were sleeping like the dead! Something happened on the plane, and you didn’t even notice!”
The man sitting beside Wu Zui looked at the corner of his mouth with undisguised disgust and shifted his backside farther away. If Wu Zui had not been wearing a magnetic-energy protective suit, he would not even have bothered speaking to him.
“Something happened?”
At those words, Wu Zui instantly woke up.
At the front of the plane, three people were gathered in the aisle, discussing something. Two of them were also wearing magnetic-energy protective suits. From their solemn expressions, it was impossible to tell what grave incident had occurred.
“Yeah! Someone suddenly died in first class. Apparently, he doesn’t have a single wound on him, so the chief flight attendant used the intercom to summon all the awakened ones on board. If you’re free, you should go take a look too!”
The man beside Wu Zui explained.
Wu Zui was now completely awake. After hearing the man’s description, he hurriedly stood and went over to investigate. This was an airplane, after all. If something went wrong, there seemed to be no possible outcome other than a crash.
No matter how powerful Wu Zui was, he still could not fly.
“Gentlemen, what happened here?”
Wu Zui passed the man who had awakened him and walked straight up to the three people.
The three of them first looked him over in unison. Only after confirming from his clothing that he was an awakened one did they speak one after another.
“A gentleman died in the first-class cabin ahead. Oh~ What a pity. He looked like such a young, handsome fellow!”
The speaker was a young man who appeared to be from Country Y. His expression was extravagantly dramatic.
“We sensed resentment energy on his body, but we couldn’t find any ghosts or monsters in first class! The cabin has been temporarily isolated. That thing is really good at hiding!”
The female awakened one in the magnetic-energy protective suit spoke in a helpless Yanjing accent.
“The people in first class are trembling in fear right now. Tsk, tsk. You really don’t get to see a sight like that every day!”
The other male awakened one from the Hua Nation showed no concern at all. His face was practically wearing the expression of someone enjoying a show.
“We are already arranging for them to come here.”
The chief flight attendant, who was standing beside them, spoke up.
“May I go inside and take a look?”
Wu Zui glanced at the three awakened ones. None of them seemed particularly concerned about what was happening in first class. Perhaps they relied on their status as awakened ones and were not afraid of being haunted, so they did not take the monster seriously. Wu Zui therefore turned to ask the chief flight attendant.
“Of course!”
The chief flight attendant hurriedly gestured for him to follow.
The spirit investigator aboard the plane had gone toward the rear to search and was not here. The flight attendants were all rather frightened by what was happening in first class, so they were only too happy that an awakened one was willing to take charge.
Following the chief flight attendant, Wu Zui entered the first-class cabin. One of the seats had been sealed off by the magnetic-energy barrier prepared aboard the aircraft. Pale blue light completely enclosed the seat, eliminating any possibility of the corpse emerging and causing trouble.
A neatly dressed male corpse sat in the seat. He appeared to be under thirty years old. His head was slightly lowered, while his wide-open eyes stared straight ahead. They were filled with a grayish-white hue, making him look as though he had been dead for a long time.
Wu Zui slowly approached and began examining the surrounding objects. On the small table in front of the man sat half a glass of orange juice and his cellphone. There were no wrinkles in his suit, suggesting that he had not struggled.
A faint strand of resentment energy clung to his body. It did not appear to have been acquired just moments ago; it had probably been there for some time and was already beginning to disperse. Apart from that, Wu Zui detected no trace of resentment energy anywhere else in first class.
“Did this gentleman have any luggage or companions?”
Wu Zui turned to ask the flight attendant.
“He was traveling alone. As for his suitcase, it should be in the cargo hold at the very back. The four-star spirit investigator aboard the plane should already be inspecting it.”
The chief flight attendant thought for a moment before answering.
Just then, Wu Zui sensed two bursts of magnetic-energy fluctuations erupting successively from the rear of the plane. Immediately afterward, a surge of resentment energy exploded as well.
“Damn it!”
Wu Zui’s expression turned cold as he sprinted toward the rear, with the chief flight attendant close behind. The reason for his alarm was that one of the two magnetic-energy fluctuations was extremely familiar to him.
“Xiao Ke’ai! You’re dead meat!”
Wu Zui passed the three spirit investigators, who had already returned to their seats, and ran all the way to the rear cargo hold.
Only then did he discover that the cargo hold before him had been enveloped in a black sealed space. Earlier, while taking a nap, Wu Zui had found his golden sword inconvenient and casually left it on the table. As a result, he had no weapon on him at all.
Hellfire blazed up from Wu Zui’s fist. One punch caused the black sealed space to cave inward, while the hellfire burned a large hole through it. Wu Zui lowered his head and crawled inside. The hole closed behind him, leaving the chief flight attendant, who did not dare enter, blocked outside.
Xiao Ke’ai was standing back-to-back with a spirit investigator wearing a magnetic-energy protective suit. The two of them warily surveyed their surroundings, apparently keeping watch for some unknown enemy lurking in the darkness.
Wu Zui narrowed his eyes, red light flickering within them. A sphere of red hellfire formed in his hand.
“Sir, open flames are not permitted here!”
The chief flight attendant immediately tried to stop him from outside the sealed space.
Unfortunately, Wu Zui could not hear her voice through the barrier. Even if he had heard her, he would not have stopped. The sphere of hellfire smashed directly into the space between Xiao Ke’ai and the spirit investigator.
With a tremendous boom, the sphere struck the spirit investigator. His figure instantly twisted, then transformed into a hideous, three-foot-tall ghost hand.
Blue veins covered the back of the hand. Resentment energy flowed through its blood vessels, resisting the flames of hellfire. Its black fingernails gleamed with a blue light, while a vertical eye embedded in its palm glared fixedly at Wu Zui.
“A monster capable of resisting magnetic energy!”
As Wu Zui muttered inwardly, he shouted at the still-dazed Xiao Ke’ai, “Get over here!”
Although Xiao Ke’ai did not want Wu Zui to discover her, she knew this was no time to be willful. What frightened her even more was that her teammate, who had been standing back-to-back with her only moments earlier, had suddenly turned into such a thing. She therefore ran toward Wu Zui at top speed.
“I’ll deal with you later!”
Wu Zui glared at Xiao Ke’ai and spoke harshly. Then he took a small bottle of his own blood from inside his clothes and smeared it over his hand.
Xiao Ke’ai lowered her head and stood obediently to one side, not daring to answer.
“I hope Master will go easy on me later!”
After he finished applying the blood, Wu Zui charged at the ghost hand.
He easily dodged its claws before driving his fist into its palm. The vertical eye embedded there was instantly blinded by the blow. Black liquid continuously poured from the wound pierced through by hellfire.
Flames then flickered across the ghost hand’s body. Gradually, it was burned away completely, and the sealed space shattered along with it.
The chief flight attendant stood nearby, staring with her eyes wide.
“So cool…”
Although the ghost hand appeared to have been killed, Wu Zui sensed a tiny strand of resentment energy at the spot where it had disappeared. It was stealthily burrowing into a suitcase.
Wu Zui immediately rushed over and completely enveloped the suitcase in hellfire. He opened it and tested each item inside with hellfire. At last, he discovered that a strand of pure resentment energy was hidden within a jade pendant carved from emerald.
The instant Wu Zui noticed it, a small vertical-eyed ghost eye suddenly appeared on the jade pendant, glaring viciously into his eyes. It was exactly identical to the eye he had seen on the ghost hand, except smaller.
Bang!
Wu Zui sensed something was wrong and instantly avoided the ghost eye’s direct gaze. Then he exerted force with his hand and crushed the jade pendant. Magnetic-energy hellfire surged into it.
After a shrill scream, several wisps of black smoke drifted upward, and the ghost spirit completely dissipated.
“All right, it’s taken care of. However, it looks like you’ll need to assign another spirit investigator to guard this plane.”
Wu Zui dusted off his hands, left the cargo hold, and spoke to the chief flight attendant.
End of chapter.
