Chapter 55: What She Wants Is to Be the Only One in His Eyes and Heart
Hospital.
Standing by the window, Wen Zhixia could clearly see the scene downstairs; she spotted a familiar figure—Gu Pingsheng.
She watched intently as the man with swift, purposeful strides approached, and in an instant, her thoughts turned to Zhao Fuhuo, who was in a hospital ward.
Glancing at the time on her phone, she calculated how long it would take him to come upstairs. Ten minutes later, she turned, preparing to visit Zhao Fuhuo's room once more.
Yet, just as she turned, her gaze met Gu Pingsheng’s deep, intense eyes.
It was as if he had already been standing behind her, quietly waiting for a long while.
For a moment, Wen Zhixia couldn’t hide the surprise and astonishment in her eyes.
"Are you surprised to see me?" he asked.
She was indeed surprised; ever since she had seen Gu Pingsheng appear at the hospital, she instinctively believed he had come for Zhao Fuhuo, who had suffered a miscarriage. Yet he appeared behind her, catching her off guard.
"Why are you here?" She quickly composed herself, masking her startled expression, and asked in a calm voice.
"Lanzhou said you were injured," he replied, giving her a reasonable explanation. Ye Lanzhou was aware of what had happened, and since he and Ye Lanzhou were close friends, it was perfectly normal for him to have learned about it from him.
"Did Ye Lanzhou tell you why I was here?" she said. "Zhao Fuhuo had a miscarriage."
As she spoke, her gaze never left Gu Pingsheng's eyes.
"She lost her child. What kind of reaction do you expect from me?" Gu Pingsheng’s thin lips moved, his expression showing no hint of worry or sadness, only annoyance at her scrutinizing stare.
He revealed no flaws.
Wen Zhixia withdrew her gaze. "Since you’re here, you should go see her. After all, you are still her senior."
Inside the ward, Zhao Fuhuo, already awake, burst into tears the instant she saw Gu Pingsheng and Wen Zhixia together.
Even Wen Zhixia had to admit that a delicate, frail woman, shedding tears in her weakness and looking pitifully at a man, truly evoked a man's protective instincts.
"Take good care of yourself," Gu Pingsheng said in a low voice.
"This woman killed my child," Zhao Fuhuo pointed at Wen Zhixia, accusing her with tears and cries.
"I already know what happened. It was just an accident." Even without Ye Lanzhou's account over the phone, Gu Pingsheng would never believe Wen Zhixia could do such a thing.
"It wasn’t an accident. They planned it; they wanted to kill my child." Hearing Gu Pingsheng call it an accident, Zhao Fuhuo became agitated. "She’s a murderer! She can’t have children herself, so she doesn’t want others to have them!"
This was the second time Wen Zhixia had heard from Zhao Fuhuo’s mouth that she herself couldn’t bear children. "Who told you I can’t?"
Zhao Fuhuo laughed maniacally, "All these years, has your belly ever shown any sign? Would a normal woman still have nothing happening by now?"
"How can you be sure it’s my problem?" Wen Zhixia asked.
If there were no children, either spouse could be the cause, yet Zhao Fuhuo was adamant it was Wen Zhixia’s issue—what did that imply?
Zhao Fuhuo sneered, "Come closer and I’ll tell you."
Gu Pingsheng’s brows furrowed sharply, his gaze dark upon the frenzied Zhao Fuhuo.
Wen Zhixia took a few steps forward.
Zhao Fuhuo looked at her, "Because..."
Gu Pingsheng called out, "Xia..."
"Because you deserve it! A woman as cruel as you will never have children!" As Wen Zhixia approached, Zhao Fuhuo suddenly sat up in bed, grabbed Wen Zhixia's hair, and her fingers clawed at her face.
Though Wen Zhixia was alert and avoided having her face scratched, a few strands of her hair were still pulled out, her scalp tingling and aching.
"Smack."
Before Zhao Fuhuo could go mad again, Gu Pingsheng had already pulled Wen Zhixia behind him and slapped Zhao Fuhuo so hard she fell from the bed, the force evident.
A nurse doing rounds saw this and rushed to intervene, but under Gu Pingsheng’s cold gaze, she stood aside, not daring to make another move.
On the floor, Zhao Fuhuo held her face, staring in disbelief at the man radiating icy coldness, forgetting even the pain from her recent surgery.
"Are you sober now?!" Gu Pingsheng asked with a dark tone.
Wen Zhixia’s clear, beautiful eyes watched the man who had pulled her behind him, uncertain what she felt.
He protected her, as he always had for ten years.
Yet, even so, there seemed to be a thin veil between them, something unseen that obscured the truth.
Suddenly, Zhao Fuhuo collapsed to the ground and cried, covering her face.
Gu Pingsheng’s sharp gaze shifted to Wen Zhixia, noticing the wounds on her neck and her disheveled hair. "Do you trust me so little?!"
Wen Zhixia’s lips moved, but in his angry gaze, she said nothing.
Gu Pingsheng’s raised hand suddenly clenched; whether it was self-mockery or cold laughter, it was unclear. Gripping her arm, he dragged her out of the ward.
His long legs and large strides, fueled by anger, made him walk quickly. Wen Zhixia couldn’t keep up and nearly stumbled several times.
"Gu Pingsheng, let go."
"Treat the wound on her neck," Gu Pingsheng handed her straight to the doctor, his face dark as he turned to leave.
The doctor looked at the departing man, then at the woman left behind, putting down his medical chart. "This wound... was it caused by an animal?"
"It wasn’t an animal, it was a person," Wen Zhixia replied, turning her head.
The doctor was silent for a moment, then examined the scratches on her neck. "You came a bit late. The wounds have already healed."
Had it been an animal, a vaccine would be needed, but since it was inflicted by a person and the wounds were healing, there was little need for treatment.
Wen Zhixia was speechless.
In the ward.
Zhao Fuhuo had been helped back into bed by the nurse, but her emotions were uncontrollable; even the nurse’s kindness was met with curses.
Yet the torn corner of her mouth limited her outbursts, so she could only curse a few times.
When Li Yueting arrived, Zhao Fuhuo was smashing the teacup on the table, her expression vicious.
"If I were you, I wouldn’t behave so extreme right now," Li Yueting entered and said.
"It’s not your child that was lost, what do you understand!" Zhao Fuhuo shouted.
At the mention of the word “child,” Li Yueting’s hand, hanging at her side, clenched slightly. "If you wish to not only lose your child but also completely lose Gu’s affection, keep acting crazy."
"What do you mean?" Zhao Fuhuo clutched her blanket, asking.
Li Yueting sat down. "You lost Gu’s child; he must feel something. But Wen Zhixia has been his companion for years, supporting him through hardships and their journey together. He owes her some respect. And you, to be blunt, your value can be replaced at any time, because there will always be younger, prettier, more obedient women.
Your advantage is the novelty Gu feels for you, and... your fragile state after losing your child. If you want to throw tantrums like Wen Zhixia does in front of him, at least for now, you don’t have that right."
Unable to see her own survival advantages and disadvantages, Li Yueting realized she had overestimated her before.
Her words gradually calmed Zhao Fuhuo. "You’re right, I shouldn’t wallow in the pain of losing my child and thereby lose my senior’s affection."
Ultimately, Zhao Fuhuo’s breakdown and pain were more about losing a blood-related leverage than genuine affection for the child. Li Yueting’s words woke her up.
"But... I just acted so badly in front of my senior, he’s probably still angry with me." Thinking of this, Zhao Fuhuo’s hatred toward Wen Zhixia deepened. If not for her, she would never have lost control in front of Gu Pingsheng.
She hoped Li Yueting would give her advice, but Li Yueting was no fool. "This is between you and Gu. What can I, an outsider, do?"
Lanhu County.
After leaving the hospital, Gu Pingsheng did not contact Wen Zhixia until evening.
As night fell, Wen Zhixia received a call from the hospital.
The words “no parent-child relationship” came clearly through the phone, prompting Wen Zhixia to pause for a few seconds. "Is there any possibility of an error?"
"Parentage testing isn’t a major procedure; under normal circumstances, errors are unlikely," replied the voice on the other end.
Wen Zhixia fell silent.
"...Are you unhappy that it’s not Gu’s child?" Normally, wives who arrange paternity tests between their husbands and another woman’s child—unless the couple is already estranged—would be pleased or at least comforted by such a result.
But Wen Zhixia’s silence left the doctor puzzled.
"Do it again," Wen Zhixia said. "Please supervise the process from start to finish, don’t let anyone else interfere."
"Are you suspecting... someone tampered with the results?"
Wen Zhixia pressed her temples. "Yes."
Gu Pingsheng’s appearance had been too coincidental, and he...
"I’ll wait for your news," Wen Zhixia said no more, ending the call. But as she turned, she saw Gu Pingsheng behind her, she didn’t know when he had arrived.
He held a bouquet of blooming white roses, evidently intending to surprise her, but unexpectedly overheard her phone conversation.
Wen Zhixia had no idea how much he’d heard; their eyes met, neither speaking first.
Until Gu Pingsheng, mocking, released the flowers right in front of her.
The blooms, struck, scattered petals across the floor.
"You trust me so little?" His slender fingers gripped her chin tightly, his gaze icy with anger. "Wen Zhixia, you—"
How pure could you be!
But he restrained himself, leaving the words unsaid.
Some things, once spoken, could never be taken back.
The phone buzzed.
Gu Pingsheng’s phone rang—it was Zhao Fuhuo calling.
He never answered calls from other women in Wen Zhixia’s presence, but this time, he did. His gaze deep as he looked at Wen Zhixia, he said, "I’m coming to see you now."
Zhao Fuhuo knew he would be at Lanhu County at this hour; the call was meant to test his attitude, never expecting he would actually come, a pleasant surprise.
But as she tried to speak, Gu Pingsheng had already hung up.
Wen Zhixia frowned, her beautiful lips pressed tight.
Gu Pingsheng, holding his phone, met her gaze coldly; neither spoke first.
She said nothing for a long time, and Gu Pingsheng’s suppressed anger edged toward eruption. Minutes later, he grabbed his car keys and left in fury.
The sound of the door slamming echoed; Wen Zhixia’s eyes trembled, and she slowly crouched to pick up the fallen flowers.
Sensing her sadness, the kitten crawled to her feet, nudging her hand with its round head.
In the car, Gu Pingsheng glanced at the tightly closed door, laughed at himself, and started the engine.
Ye Lanzhou received Gu Pingsheng’s call at nine o’clock that night.
The moment he answered, he heard the bustling noise behind Gu Pingsheng. "Where are you?"
Gu Pingsheng didn’t reply, but asked, "The child that was lost—Xia Xia had a paternity test done."
Ye Lanzhou raised his brows. "Little Wen is always herself." In a hospital, facing the deranged Zhao Fuhuo, she still thought to use the lost embryo for a paternity test.
"Enough with the sarcasm." Gu Pingsheng tilted his head, drinking most of his liquor.
Ye Lanzhou chuckled, "I’m just curious, why didn’t you keep this child? Instead, you had someone put something in the supplements so she’d miscarry. Keeping the child would have given Gu a backup, wouldn’t it?"
Gu Pingsheng frowned. "Nonsense!"
Ye Lanzhou shrugged. "It’s nonsense, then."
"Come drink with me," Gu Pingsheng gestured for the bartender to pour another glass.
When Ye Lanzhou arrived, he immediately spotted Gu Pingsheng at the bar, unmistakable because the tipsy Gu was flanked by two seductive women, their enticing glances and flirtatious gestures heating up the atmosphere.
Ye Lanzhou picked up a glass, knocked it on the table twice, and Gu Pingsheng, indifferent, withdrew from the bar, leaving the two women glaring at each other.
"Gu always has women around, no matter the time," Ye Lanzhou joked, placing a bottle of liquor on the table.
Gu Pingsheng ignored him and drank.
"You called me just to watch you drink?" Ye Lanzhou saw him gulping like water, raised his eyebrows and asked.
Soon enough, when Gu Pingsheng drank himself into a stupor and had to call Wen Zhixia to help him home, Ye Lanzhou finally realized Gu’s purpose for inviting him.
Ye Lanzhou laughed in exasperation; being used as a tool this way...
"Wen Zhixia must owe you something from a past life," he muttered. Gu Pingsheng had truly mastered the art of calculation.
When Wen Zhixia arrived, she saw Gu Pingsheng completely unconscious, and Ye Lanzhou relaxedly sipping wine.
"Why did you let him drink so much?" Wen Zhixia asked.
Ye Lanzhou was speechless. He let him?
"Take him home, hurry," Ye Lanzhou waved, not wanting trouble. "Settle the bill, your man invited me, I didn’t bring money."
Wen Zhixia and the bartender together moved Gu Pingsheng to the car, closing the door with a sigh.
Ye Lanzhou yawned. "You two should solve your own problems, don’t drag people out at night." He paused, looking at Wen Zhixia’s calm brows. Before she got in, he added, "Gu Pingsheng—his affection for you is deep. No one can compare."
Were it not for witnessing it himself, Ye Lanzhou wouldn’t have believed someone like Gu Pingsheng could fall for anyone.
"Young Ye, do you know the difference between liking most and liking only?" Wen Zhixia raised her eyes.
The former is picking one from the pile of likes; the latter is unique.
What use is “no one can compare”?
She wanted to be the only one in his heart and soul, just as Gu Pingsheng promised when pursuing her. She believed him, so he must keep his word.
Ye Lanzhou fell silent until Wen Zhixia drove off with Gu Pingsheng, then slowly recovered his composure, sighing softly as he prepared to head home himself.
"Sir, please settle the bill first," the bartender stopped him as he tried to leave.
Ye Lanzhou paused. "That woman didn’t pay?"
The bartender stared at him, as if afraid he would slip away. "No."
Ye Lanzhou was speechless.
In the end, the Ye family’s driver paid the bill.
Back at Lanhu County, Gu Pingsheng, watching Wen Zhixia remove his shoes and coat, drunkenly pressed her down, "Wen Zhixia, you have no heart."
When drunk, he always acted like a child, reckless and lacking the dignity and solemnity of Gu in his sober moments.
Wen Zhixia pushed his hand away. "I’ll run you a bath; you smell terrible."
She expressionlessly tried to get up, but he hugged her from behind, and the two fell sideways onto the bed, his cheek pressed against her neck, his voice low and rough, "Xia Xia, say you love me..."
The smell of alcohol on him was strong, penetrating enough to intoxicate her as well. He bit her, and she gasped in pain.
Only then did he loosen his bite slightly, his thin lips grazing the teeth marks on her neck, sending a shiver through her.
Wen Zhixia turned, her cool, clear eyes looking at him. "Go take a shower."
He was drunk and uncooperative, so in the end Wen Zhixia had no choice but to comply, saying the sweet words he wanted to hear.
She knew, that was all he wanted.
She had resolved to indulge his antics when overwhelmed by him.
The post-drinking shower naturally turned into the drunk acting sly, devouring the sober.
Meanwhile, Zhao Fuhuo, who had been waiting anxiously for Gu Pingsheng, grew more frantic as time passed. When her phone finally rang, someone’s hand from the bed accidentally hit the answer button, and the ambiguous sounds were transmitted through the line to Zhao Fuhuo’s ears.
