Chapter 20: He Wanted to Devour Her Whole
When Gu Pingsheng received the call from the police station, he was in the middle of a meeting, listening to a high-level executive summary. The moment he understood that the police were calling about Wen Zhixia being at the station, his expression changed abruptly and he stood up in a flash.
“The rest of the meeting will be chaired by Mr. Zhao,” he announced hastily before striding out of the conference room.
The executives inside exchanged baffled glances, none of them understanding what could have happened to make Mr. Gu look so grim.
Meanwhile, at the police station.
Three women sat there, hair disheveled, faces mottled with bruises. The hired thugs who had been brought in with them cried out their grievances, “Officer, we swear we didn’t touch them! Before we could do anything, you’d already arrived.”
Lin Huixian, clutching her face, was accusing Wen Zhixia and Hua Qianjiao before the officers. “It was them, they started it! Just look at my face!”
Hua Qianjiao, never having been in a police station before, cowered behind Wen Zhixia in fear as she eyed the stern officers. “Sister Wen, I want to go home,” she whispered.
Wen Zhixia patted her hand reassuringly. “Officer, it was Lin Huixian who insulted my sister and brought thugs to besiege us first. If you want proof, I have a video of this woman attacking someone at the mall today.”
She had no taste for pointless arguments; if there was evidence, she would present it directly. If not, she’d at least try to steer suspicion away with her words.
“That doesn’t count as evidence! I might have acted out at the mall, but that’s got nothing to do with this! It was those two lunatics who struck first!” Lin Huixian rose to her feet and protested loudly.
“Sit down!” barked an officer.
Wen Zhixia fixed her gaze on Lin Huixian and turned her phone screen toward her. It was nothing more than a landscape photo—no video at all.
She curled her lips in a faint smile. “I think you all heard it clearly—she just admitted she started it. We merely defended ourselves.”
“Liar! You don’t have any video, you’re tricking me!” Realizing she’d been strung along, Lin Huixian lunged at her, but was firmly restrained by the officers.
“If you have nothing to hide, Miss Lin, you wouldn’t fall for such a simple trick,” Wen Zhixia replied calmly.
Indeed, guilt reveals itself. Otherwise, why wouldn’t she realize that given how suddenly everything happened, and with Wen Zhixia regarding Hua Qianjiao as her own sister, it was impossible she’d just stand by and record a video while her sister was being attacked? It was a flimsy lie, but enough.
Lin Huixian first lost control, then gradually calmed herself, sneering as she glanced at Hua Qianjiao, who was being shielded by Wen Zhixia. “Qing Qi will be here soon. Without video evidence, do you think he’ll believe you or me?!”
Wen Zhixia’s brows knitted.
“I’m his fiancée,” Hua Qianjiao declared loudly, her eyes wide.
Lin Huixian let out a cold laugh, but in the next instant walked up to Hua Qianjiao and choked out tearfully, “I know, but I truly love him. I don’t need a title or anything else; all I want is to see him every day. Why… why can’t you even grant me such a small wish?”
Hua Qianjiao was stunned by her sudden change, but the very next moment, seeing Qing Qi storm in, face full of anger, she understood everything.
“Hua Qianjiao, you’ve gone too far!” Qing Qi, heart aching, pulled Lin Huixian into his arms and pushed Hua Qianjiao away.
Sobbing, Lin Huixian pressed her face to his chest. “Don’t be so harsh on Miss Hua. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have fallen in love with you. If she’s upset and slaps me a few times, it’s only what I deserve.”
His beloved had been struck. Qing Qi’s gaze toward Hua Qianjiao was almost murderous. Hua Qianjiao clutched her chest, which ached faintly, and explained in a low voice, “She hit me first.”
“Apologize!” Qing Qi demanded coldly.
“When you’re judging someone’s crime, shouldn’t you first find out what actually happened?” Wen Zhixia interjected.
Qing Qi looked down at the woman in his arms tenderly. “If you won’t apologize, then let Huixian hit you back. Then we’ll call it even. Otherwise—”
“Otherwise, what does Mr. Qing intend to do?” A cold voice cut through the air as Gu Pingsheng strode in, his steps long and imposing.
