Chapter 125: I’m a Nurse, Not Someone to Be Stared at Naked!

Since she had decided to go to the hospital for a check-up, Wen Zhixia felt it necessary to have a witness accompany them. She glanced at the young female teacher nearby and said, “If you’re free, would you come with us?”

The teacher immediately nodded.

Wen Zhixia took the little one’s hand and asked, “Do you want to be carried?”

The child’s eyes instantly sparkled, his tiny hands lifting up, yet in the end, he only softly grasped Wen Zhixia’s hand, puffing out his chubby little arm with a childish but obedient voice: “Tired.”

Walking while being carried tires him out.

Wen Zhixia was momentarily taken aback, then chuckled softly as she pinched his cheek. “You’re quite endearing.”

Though his father was hardly likable, this child was truly adorable.

Gu Pingsheng’s temperament, whether in his youth or now, was anything but charming. Yet the child he raised was so cute—it was truly strange.

Aunt Zhao, watching the tall and small holding hands, followed closely behind after ending her call.

This child had been raised entirely according to Wen Zhixia’s preferences. Perhaps even she herself had forgotten that the child she once idealized was exactly this little sticky rice ball she now had.

“Why come to the provincial hospital just for a physical exam?” The woman standing at the hospital entrance was displeased.

Everyone knew this was the best—and most expensive—hospital in Sifang City.

“If it’s not the most authoritative report, what if something happens later and you come looking for us?” Wen Zhixia smiled faintly. “This is to give you peace of mind. Let’s go.”

Who can’t sweet-talk? A gentle blade can still wound.

The woman felt she had suffered a silent loss and thought, if it cost a little more money, so be it. After all, her child hadn’t lost out. But when she stepped into the hospital and saw the director leading the core medical team personally examine the child, and the high-end equipment—clearly very expensive—being used one machine after another to scrutinize Gu Youzhi from head to toe, her face darkened completely.

“What’s going on here? Two kids fighting—does it have to be such a big fuss? The director himself was called out!”

Wen Zhixia kept her smile, saying, “Since someone is willing to pay, we naturally want to use the best medical conditions and do a thorough check. These high-end machines usually cost twenty to thirty thousand per use—I rarely see them operated.”

“Twenty to thirty thousand?” The woman doubted her ears for a moment. Though her family was comfortably middle-class, they were not extravagant. Now Wen Zhixia was telling her that just one use of this machine cost twenty to thirty thousand?!

“Shh.” Wen Zhixia placed a finger gently over her lips, her clear and elegant brows raised, voice calm but cutting: “This is a hospital, not your neighborhood market. Disturbing the doctors during the exam might mean having to run another test for verification—that would be an extra charge.”

The woman was furious. The child she had been holding grew impatient after nearly an hour of testing and began crying, demanding to go home.

Wen Zhixia leisurely sat on a nearby sofa, eyes fixed on the examined Gu Youzhi.

The little one was quiet and well-behaved. After each test, he would stand up and instinctively look in her direction, cocking his head to smile at her in a simple, adorable way.

Wen Zhixia pursed her lips. Honestly, she liked this child very much. She even wanted to ask if he would be willing to be her son outright, to protect him from the unpredictable nature of Gu Pingsheng, so that this cute little boy wouldn’t be raised into a reckless scoundrel.

An hour later, the results came out. Director Zhang personally came out to show her the reports: “Nothing serious, just some superficial wounds.”

Before Wen Zhixia could speak, the woman beside her, unwilling to stay silent, sneered: “I said two kids fighting couldn’t be anything serious. Even if he got hit twice, it’s like a tickle. Your child is so precious, making such a fuss—it’s exhausting for everyone.”

Wen Zhixia avoided arguing and said, “Since there’s nothing serious, please settle the bill.”

The woman glanced at the bill and nearly popped her eyes out: “Eighty-eight thousand two hundred?! Why don’t you just rob a bank?!”

“Nurse,” a staff member holding the bill explained, “our hospital prices are all clear. The machine and various test fees total five thousand eight hundred. The director and chiefs supervised the entire process to avoid errors, along with other labor costs. Eighty-eight thousand two hundred is after discount.”

The woman gripped the bill tightly. How was she supposed to explain dropping nearly a hundred thousand yuan to her husband? She was just a housewife without an income; her husband was the sole breadwinner. While they weren’t short of money, she wasn’t supposed to spend recklessly—and now, this check-up cost so much...

“You were trying to extort me from the start!” the woman snapped angrily.

Wen Zhixia adjusted her hair and said coolly, “Madam, the hospital’s prices are transparent. You can’t say whatever you want.”

“Mom, hurry up and pay! I want pig’s trotters; I’m hungry!” the chubby little boy tugged at the woman’s clothes impatiently.

The woman shot Wen Zhixia a sour look. “It’s just over eighty thousand. I’ll just pretend I was bitten by a dog.”

Wen Zhixia’s expression darkened.

The woman threw the money down and turned to leave with the child, casting a sinister glance back at Wen Zhixia before departing.

Wen Zhixia bent down and straightened Gu Youzhi’s clothes. His bruises and cuts had been carefully treated. “Will there be scars?”

Such an adorably expressive little face—if scars remained, anyone would feel heartbroken.

“The scars aren’t deep; they shouldn’t leave marks,” the doctor reassured her.

As the little one walked out, he suddenly stopped and looked attentively in one direction.

Following his gaze, Wen Zhixia saw Gu Pingsheng just coming out of a ward, his arm draped with a jacket, his left hand’s back covered with an IV patch.

He stepped forward and gently patted the little one’s head, then looked at Wen Zhixia. “...I know what happened. I’m glad you came.”

Wen Zhixia pressed her lips together; she didn’t need him to be glad.

“Since you’re fine, the child’s yours.”

“I still have one more IV. After it’s done, we’ll eat together.” Gu Pingsheng seemed to ignore her previous words, his deep eyes fixed on her.

Wen Zhixia opened her mouth to refuse, but both father and son each grabbed one of her hands in perfect unison, leaving her no chance to decline.

The nurse, seeing him return, reinserted the needle into his hand’s vein.

Wen Zhixia had been frequently ill as a child, so needles made her uneasy. When the nurse inserted the IV, she instinctively looked away.

The little one, noticing her reaction, covered his eyes with his chubby hands but left a small gap between his fingers.

Gu Pingsheng watched their gestures, a faint smile curling his thin lips.

Gu Youzhi pulled a string from his pocket, which Wen Zhixia found familiar. She looked at him in surprise. “The one you played with last time?”

The last time, after they finished drawing in her office, Wen Zhixia had noticed a string used to tie papers and had taught him how to weave a flower knot.

She had thought it would be hard for such a young child to understand, but he was smart enough to learn by analogy, and after a few tries, they could play together clumsily.

Wen Zhixia didn’t mind the string itself but hadn’t expected the little one to keep it in his pocket all along.

He nodded and, with small fingers weaving and twisting, formed the simplest “double cross” knot for her to untie.

Wen Zhixia sat facing him and stretched out her hand.

Compared to last time, the little one was clearly much more skilled. Wen Zhixia was surprised several times.

If Aunt Zhao were here, she would have been able to explain this to her.

After returning home last time, Gu Youzhi often played with the string by himself. Once he got more skilled, he would pester Aunt Zhao and Aunt Wang to practice with him, and even Gu Pingsheng after work wasn’t spared.

Seeing Wen Zhixia’s eyes filled only with their son and not even glancing at him, Gu Pingsheng hesitated, unsure whether playing the familial card would work.

“Xia Xia,” Gu Pingsheng glanced at the half-used IV bag and called softly.

Wen Zhixia heard him but chose not to respond.

He frowned and looked at his son, who hesitated but then whispered, “Mom, Dad is calling you.”

Now Wen Zhixia couldn’t pretend not to hear. She turned her head slightly to look at him.

The ward was warm, and Wen Zhixia had just taken off her coat, wearing a knitted sweater that revealed her slender, graceful neck and, as she turned her head, one delicate collarbone.

Gu Pingsheng’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he said, “Help me to the bathroom.”

Wen Zhixia said nothing, just turned her head away. “Call a nurse yourself.”

She wouldn’t help, nor would she go.

“If I call a nurse, won’t I be exposed?” he murmured.

Wen Zhixia pursed her lips. “Call a male nurse.”

She wasn’t a naive girl anymore—she had been fooled by him before in school. There was no way she’d be tricked again.

“A man isn’t appropriate either,” he said. “If you won’t, then have Youzhi help.”

Wen Zhixia frowned. “He’s so little. Do you have any conscience asking him to take care of you?”

Gu Pingsheng smiled lightly. “You’ve blocked all my options. What, if I’m in distress, you expect me to be served by you forever?”

She wouldn’t help, nor would she let the child help. He disliked being fussed over by strangers, so one of them had to give in.

“Mom.” Gu Youzhi tugged at Wen Zhixia’s shirt corner, shaking it gently. “I’ll open the door for you.”

Then he actually waddled over with his little legs to open the bathroom door.

Wen Zhixia: “...”

Gu Pingsheng looked at his sensible son with approval.

“There’s an IV hook in there. Just... untie it.”

Wen Zhixia frowned, and after a few seconds, squeezed out, “...Wait a little longer.”

Half an hour left until the drip finished.

Gu Pingsheng said, “I can’t wait.”

“You can manage on your own. Stop pretending.” He was good at playing the victim, but he could definitely handle it with one hand.

“I won’t touch you,” he promised, but still made no move, as if giving up: “If it’s really impossible, want me to show you how?”

He shamelessly said it—and actually started to reach out.
