Chapter 119: Song Li's Joy
"Of course it's true. You know I don't have the authority to make large expenditures at the Baili Group. If it wasn't He Haoxuan's money, where would I have gotten so much?" Li Qingying explained.
Song Li asked, half-doubting, "So, you're saying He Haoxuan isn't a good-for-nothing, and he's actually very wealthy?"
"Mom, just think about it. Two BMW X7s, plus the millions in gifts brought to the Song family today—how could he not have money?" Li Qingying countered.
Upon hearing this, Song Li jumped up immediately. "This Haoxuan, he's far too wasteful! Even if he wanted to please me, there was no need to spend millions. Giving just a few tens of thousands would have been enough to make my relatives overjoyed."
Song Li was being conceited, assuming that He Haoxuan had brought those gifts to the Song family to curry favor with her. In reality, he only wanted to please her daughter.
"Wait, if He Haoxuan spent so much money, does he have any left?" Song Li suddenly looked alarmed, casting a wary glance at He Haoxuan. If he were a pauper, there would be no reason to keep him in the Li household; she would kick him out immediately so her daughter could find a wealthy husband who would treat his mother-in-law well.
Li Qingying felt a jolt of panic; things were taking a turn for the worse. If her snobbish mother realized He Haoxuan was now penniless, she would surely drive him out of the house.
"Mom, do you think he's that foolish? If he didn't have money, would he have spent every cent he had to buy gifts for your relatives?" Li Qingying lied deliberately.
At the same time, she felt a bitter ache in her heart. To please her, He Haoxuan had actually spent all his money on gifts for the Song family. His only goal was to see her smile. Thinking of this, her heart grew heavy.
Song Li’s eyes lit up again. "Wow, it seems He Haoxuan is a wealthy young master after all."
"Exactly, Mom. You shouldn't try to chase him away anymore," Li Qingying said, suppressing a smile. Her husband could never be a wealthy young master; he had simply won a prize abroad some time ago and had some money, but he had spent it all on her.
"Qingying, how could you say that? Your mother isn't that kind of person," Song Li said with a beaming smile. "Even if He Haoxuan didn't have a cent, I wouldn't chase him away."
"Is that so?" He Haoxuan didn't believe a word from such a snobbish mother-in-law.
Song Li laughed, "Haoxuan, when have I ever been unkind? For these past few months, I've been very good to you."
He Haoxuan felt like vomiting. Song Li was truly shameless; wasn't she afraid of being struck by lightning for lying in the middle of the night?
Just then, Li Dong came charging in, brandishing a kitchen knife. "Wife, I'm here!"
Seeing Li Dong in such a state, Song Li scolded him angrily, "Li Dong, what are you doing?"
"I'm here to hack He Haoxuan with this knife!" Li Dong declared loudly.
"Go away! Haoxuan is our son-in-law, why would you hack him?" Song Li snapped. "Li Dong, you're getting on in years, are you still going to act like a fool?"
Li Dong was bewildered. "Wife, weren't you the one who told me to bring the knife to hack He Haoxuan? What's wrong? Do you have a fever that's burned your brain?"
"I'll burn your head!" Song Li retorted. "Get downstairs right now and stop this nonsense."
Hearing her rebuke, Li Dong had no choice but to retreat downstairs, looking dejected.
Song Li turned back to He Haoxuan with a smile. "Haoxuan, don't blame Li Dong. He’s short-sighted and narrow-minded. He’s blind to see how wealthy you are."
"Mom, you just said that wasn't why you were judging him," Li Qingying reminded her.
Song Li nodded guiltily. "That's true. How could I be such a vain person? Even if He Haoxuan were a pauper and a good-for-nothing, I wouldn't hold it against him."
He Haoxuan was taken aback. "Mom, what are you saying?"
"Haoxuan, don't misunderstand. By 'not holding it against you,' I meant I wouldn't chase you away," Song Li laughed. "You young people should go talk—no, it's getting late, you should get some sleep. You need to take advantage of your youth to have a child, and then we'll buy a villa."
Song Li was indeed a shrewd woman, immediately shifting to the main topic. She had boasted at the Song family home today about buying a large villa, and since she had no money herself, she could find a way through He Haoxuan. If he could toss out millions today, he would likely be able to produce tens of millions tomorrow. So, regardless of whether they had a child or not, she wanted to get a villa first so she could continue to brag to the Song family.
"Sounds good, sounds good!" He Haoxuan exclaimed excitedly. "Mom, I'll buy the house tomorrow, and tonight I'll work hard!"
Dammit, with his physique, he could surely live up to the name of a seven-times-a-night man.
"He Haoxuan, stop spouting nonsense!" Li Qingying’s face turned bright red as she realized his words were becoming increasingly inappropriate.
Song Li, however, was overjoyed, as this aligned perfectly with her wishes. She certainly wasn't going to let Li Qingying scold her precious son-in-law.
"Qingying, don't scold Haoxuan. It's not easy for him, always thinking of you, and he's so handsome and modest. If I were twenty years younger, I’d have other ideas myself!" Caught up in the prospect of that villa, Song Li was now speaking without any filter.
Seeing that her mother was becoming increasingly outrageous, Li Qingying couldn't take it anymore. "He Haoxuan, get back to your own room!"
"Wife, my room door is locked; I can't get in," He Haoxuan said with a bitter expression.
"Hmph, what do you mean you can't get in? Didn't you climb through the window before? Go climb back!" Li Qingying insisted, her face stern.
"I can't," He Haoxuan said. "I twisted my ankle when I climbed up earlier, and it's hurting quite a bit. I'll have to sleep here for the night and see if it's better tomorrow so I can climb back."
*Heh heh heh.* Since Song Li didn't object, it seemed he would be able to sleep in Li Qingying's room from now on. It appeared he shouldn't keep such a low profile anymore; he would just have to be as wealthy as he could be.
"Haoxuan, just sleep in Qingying's room from now on, it's fine," Song Li said, walking toward the door. "You two carry on; I'll act as if nothing happened."
Seeing Song Li leave, He Haoxuan said happily, "Wife, now that your mom is gone, we should really work hard."
"He Haoxuan, if you dare to touch my bed, I will make sure you have nowhere to be buried!" Li Qingying said furiously.
Seeing her anger, He Haoxuan had no choice but to obediently pull his floor bedding from the closet and set it up to rest. Seeing that he wasn't making any untoward moves, Li Qingying finally felt at ease.
*This He Haoxuan,* she thought. *He has no idea how dangerous that was.* If her mother had sensed that he was truly penniless, she would have certainly had her father hack him with that kitchen knife.
*Sigh.* Now that she had claimed he was wealthy, she would have to keep up the charade in front of her mother, which would be exhausting. What a mess, a truly troublesome mess. But things were already this way—what else could she do?
