Chapter 102: The Resonant Gold Mechanical Legion

“There’s a passage over here. Come this way!” Tony Stark found a passage, though he had no idea where it led.

The four moved into it, walking forward in silence. The corridor was pitch black with no light. Arthur took two flashlights from his trousers and handed one to Steve. The three noticed how he had hidden flashlights there, but none of them bothered to ask. They kept moving carefully, making no sound.

After about ten minutes, they reached the end: a circular stone chamber. All around it stood machines—countless automated mechanical arms shaping steel robots. Above, a huge, intricate control unit governed all those arms. Arthur and the others were stunned. In only three days, Ultron had forged so many steel robots. Luckily, they had found them in time.

“Are these made from vibranium?” Steve Rogers asked as he watched the robots.

Tony Stark nodded. Both of them felt a chill in the back of their necks. They knew how dangerous vibranium was—how could they possibly handle so many vibranium robots?

Arthur and Thor felt nothing. One was an Asgardian god, the other had two of the universe’s mightiest Infinity Stones; they did not treat those robots as a serious threat.

“We have to stop them from manufacturing anymore. Destroy this place,” Tony said.

Arthur raised his trident and sent a surge of immense orange energy into the huge machine above, and it erupted in an instant. Every mechanical arm stopped at once.

“Done?” Thor asked.

At that moment, Ultron’s voice echoed from all sides.

“So you have finally come. Too bad you cannot stop me. I will use my vibranium legion to destroy every human on Earth. Only then will the world have true peace!”

In every direction of the circular cavern, all the robots spoke at once. Their eyes flared on and on. The engines powering them all roared awake; every robot raised its right hand as if in unison, and endless energy cannons fired toward the four of them.

At that critical moment, Arthur’s right-hand red gem flashed. A red field wrapped around all four, and they vanished in place. The cave below exploded with flame and fireballs. The entire vibranium mine shook like an earthquake.

When the blast died down, the red energy dispersed and the four reappeared where they had stood. A huge semicircular pit had already been carved beneath their feet.

“Good grief, that nearly killed me. I thought I was a goner,” Tony said dramatically.

“This is too tight a place to fight them in. We need to get back to the surface,” Steve Rogers said.

“We’ll blast through from above together,” Arthur said. He unleashed the full force of his trident, sending a massive orange beam straight at the top of the cavern.

Tony’s chest glowed with yellow energy and shot forth to combine with Arthur’s orange. Thor raised Mjolnir and summoned vast lightning. The three energies converged on the cavern ceiling.

Boom!

The rock above them exploded open, and sunlight poured into the mine.

Arthur lifted Steve Rogers and shot upward into the air. Tony Stark and Thor followed.

As they ascended, countless robots raised their energy cannons and fired at the four. Arthur’s right-hand red light flashed, turning all four transparent. The energy blasts passed straight through their bodies and detonated against the walls, striking several vibranium robots by accident.

“Now that is an excellent trick,” Tony said, watching the attacks tear through them.

As the three flew out of the vibranium mine, a shadowed figure appeared before them. Arthur had no chance to identify it before a blast of massive red energy struck him from behind. Arthur and Steve were sent crashing down toward the ground.

Thor and Tony reacted in time. Tony fired an energy cannon at the figure, and Thor swung his hammer at the sudden intruder.

It was Ultron. He wore a black cloak. Tony’s blast hit him, and Thor’s hammer sent him flying.

“Arthur! Steve! Are you all right?” Dr. Banner, Sully, and Wanda stepped out of the fighter aircraft when they heard the roaring blasts, just as a huge crater was torn open in the ground below from three converging strikes.

The four emerged from the hole, and behind them a dark blur raced after Arthur and knocked both him and Steve to the ground.

“Fine!” Wanda helped Arthur up. Steve got to his feet on his own. The blow that had struck them had been blocked by Arthur’s armor, so he was unharmed.

“Sully, get on the fighter and leave immediately. Find your brother and do what you can to seal Wakanda completely,” Arthur said, looking up at Ultron in the sky.

Sully nodded and ran toward the jet.

Tony and Thor landed beside Arthur and Steve. The six looked up at Ultron hovering above. Ultron was no longer like when they had seen him before.

He now stood about human size. His whole body was a mix of red flesh and metal. To Arthur, he looked no different from Vision as in the films.

“Ultron. We finally found you. This time you won’t escape,” Tony said, staring at the monster he had helped create, feeling something hard to name.

“Ha! Ha! Ha! You came to me on your own, saving me the trouble of finding you. Now I have a new body and a fresh army of vibranium robots. I will exterminate all humanity, seize the Infinity Stones, and bring the world true peace!”

“You’ve overestimated yourself. You think these vibranium robots can beat us? You’re biting off more than you can chew,” Arthur said contemptuously.

“Ha! Ha! Ha! Very soon you will know how powerful I am!” Ultron replied. In an instant, countless steel robots swarmed out of the hole the trio had blasted open, filling the sky until they were a mass of steel. They seemed to be thousands and thousands.

“You came at the right moment. I’ll deal with you all at once!” Arthur, in his gold armor, raised his right fist, and the red gem unleashed a vast field that wrapped around every robot.

He clenched his fist. The robots glowed with red light, but they did not move. In an instant, a blue energy shield bloomed over each of them, shattering Arthur’s red field.

“Ha! These are vibranium-made robots. You may hold an Infinity Stone, but you cannot use its greatest power. You cannot defeat me!” Ultron laughed.

Arthur took his first humiliating blow from the Reality Stone. He truly could not release its full potential. If he had the Power Stone to aid him, he could have obliterated every robot in an instant.

Arthur’s right-hand yellow gem flared, and he tried to command the robots—but still he failed. Vibranium is strange, it seems; it can block Arthur’s Mind Gem control.

Arthur was at an endgame and could only close with them. He picked up his trident and stepped forward to charge at Ultron. Tony Stark moved to stand at his side.

Then Dr. Banner shouted, his body turning green in a flash. The Hulk emerged.

Steve lifted his shield from his back, eyes fixed and unwavering on the enemy above, while Wanda moved to stand beside him, ready to guard Steve Rogers.

Thor lifted his hammer and stood at Steve’s right, prepared to strike.

The white kitten, Venom, filled with black liquid, suddenly expanded until it became a towering monster. It screamed into the sky. All of them flinched back in surprise. That adorable little cat had somehow become such a terrifying creature.

A great battle was about to erupt, and they had not yet even begun.
