Boom!

A sudden, thunderous crash jolted the two from their beef hotpot. The cabinet blocking the front door downstairs had been knocked over. To prevent anyone from breaking down the entrance, Su Miao had deliberately stacked a bed behind the cabinet. She hadn't expected both barriers to be smashed at once.

Su Miao sprang to her feet, crossbow in hand, ready to rush to the stairway. But just then, two loud thuds sounded from the upstairs window. Someone had climbed up directly to the second floor via the balcony.

She’d grown too lax while eating.

Raising her arm, Su Miao placed another large cabinet at the stairway to block the passage, then hurried to the balcony. She saw two figures furtively ascending the rope. Their heads had barely appeared when two crossbow bolts shot out almost simultaneously, striking each right between the eyes.

“Aah!”

The two climbers fell.

Xia Xiao’an pointed to a corner of the balcony. “Sister, there’s one more over there.”

Su Miao shifted her aim. Another bolt pierced the intruder’s forehead. He tumbled down with a scream.

Three others, about to climb up, froze at the sight of their comrades falling one after another, terror-stricken and unwilling to go on.

“Damn it, there’s another cabinet here!” someone shouted from the stairway.

“Break it down!” came a loud command.

A moment later, another resounding crash echoed as the massive cabinet was toppled by the group.

Xia Xiao’an screamed, terrified.

Su Miao was frightened too. However, she’d spent these days practicing the methods Xia Xiao’an taught for controlling her body and expressions, so she wouldn’t tremble before strangers. It enabled her to maintain “calm” at this critical moment.

Most importantly, fear had no place in the current chaos.

This group attacking them was far more formidable than the previous rabble.

The cabinet was gone, but it had bought them a moment’s reprieve.

Su Miao fired her crossbow, striking the throats and foreheads of the first two attackers. They collapsed.

“Grab a door!” someone yelled from behind.

The voice quavered; clearly, they hadn’t anticipated Su Miao would kill so efficiently.

The next moment, she saw newcomers at the stairway raise a door panel, blocking her view.

“Another one!” someone shouted.

They pushed up the door panel over the fallen cabinet, then added more planks, fitting them tightly, giving Su Miao no window for attack.

Su Miao, crossbow ready, frowned. Things had become complicated.

Suddenly, Xia Xiao’an cried, “Sister, they’re about to throw something in!”

Throw something in...

The second-floor living room was only so large; if objects were hurled inside, there’d be little room to hide. Retreating with Xia Xiao’an into a bedroom would only be more dangerous—they’d be trapped. Whether by fire or smoke, they would be suffocated.

“Xiao’an, shut your eyes, cover your ears.”

Su Miao forcibly suppressed her terror, speaking with “calm.”

Xia Xiao’an didn’t know what Su Miao planned, but obediently closed her eyes and covered her ears.

Su Miao put away the crossbow, lifted her right hand, and conjured a small fireball, which flickered yellow, white, cyan, then pale blue.

With a gentle push, the pale blue fireball shot out like a bullet.

Boom!

The door panels blocking the entrance exploded into splinters. The workers behind them had no time to react before they were blasted apart, the terrifying shockwave rolling down the hallway with a searing heat, knocking others to the ground.

The quality of these panels was much poorer than the main door downstairs.

Standing behind Su Miao, Xia Xiao’an felt the ground quake, her ears ringing with the blast. When she opened her eyes again, she saw the stairway had been obliterated.

At the same time, Su Miao raised her crossbow, picking off those still alive on the stairs, bolt after bolt.

Those who survived the blast suffered horribly—some fainted from pain, others groaned and screamed.

Su Miao was no villain; she was always kind-hearted and didn’t wish to prolong their agony. Besides, these men had come to kill her.

So, it was best if they all died.

“Ugh~”

Xia Xiao’an only glanced closer before vomiting uncontrollably.

On the construction site, five men hadn’t managed to charge upstairs. The explosion nearly scared them to death.

According to their initial intelligence, Su Miao had at most a crossbow. Who would’ve thought she possessed explosives?

They fled desperately.

As for the foreman holding position at the villa’s entrance, the blast from above made him feel as if a bucket of ice water was poured over him, chilling him to the bone.

In that moment, he finally understood why the villa’s main door was only half intact.

It had been blown apart.

“Help me up!” someone slipped on the first floor while fleeing.

Touching the ground in pain, he realized it was slick with blood. Terror gripped him.

But everyone was running for their lives; none had time to help anyone up.

By then, Su Miao had stepped over corpses, chasing them downstairs. One by one, her bolts struck the backs of heads and hearts, killing instantly.

“Don’t kill me…”

A wounded man tried to beg for mercy, but a bolt pierced his throat, silencing him.

Of the sixteen who stormed the villa, only two escaped.

Once outside, they found the foreman and others had already vanished.

Nearby villas, hearing the commotion, peeked through windows, but the darkness and pouring rain obscured everything. All they could discern was that trouble had come again to the villa across the way.

Su Miao pursued with her crossbow all the way to the entrance.

Outside, night was pitch black, rain pouring, visibility nil.

“Sister?”

Xia Xiao’an stood upstairs, calling softly. The carnage at the stairway had forced her to vomit up her recently eaten dinner.

“It’s over,” Su Miao replied.

She retrieved a kerosene lamp from her magical space, lit it, and placed it on the living room table, illuminating the whole room.

She gazed at the bodies, trembling slightly until she slowly calmed. Moments earlier, she had been terrified—almost unable to control herself. Thankfully, she’d practiced these days, so her hands didn’t shake during the fight.

Still, a few intruders escaped; not all were killed.

That troubled Su Miao somewhat.

Would those who escaped return for revenge?

And now, the villa was in such a state it could no longer be lived in. Yet the neighboring villas were all occupied by refugees; moving elsewhere was impossible.

Su Miao began retrieving crossbow bolts from the bodies, accidentally splattering blood onto her dress.

Xia Xiao’an cautiously descended the stairs to the living room. Though she’d advised Su Miao not to show weakness in battle, presenting herself as a master, Xia Xiao’an herself trembled violently, even now after the fight was over.

She looked pale as she watched Su Miao recover the bolts, as if making a decision. She summoned her courage and said, “Sister, let me help you.”

Su Miao looked at Xia Xiao’an, thought for a moment, then replied, “All right.”
