Chapter 87: Swallowing Two More Demons
By the roadside, after watching the red Ford fade into the distance, Gu Zhongyan led Su Yan toward the place where the Water Demon and Earth Demon resided.
Originally, Richard had intended to leave the car for them. However, Gu Zhongyan pointed out that both he and Su Yan were powered individuals—one could teleport, the other could fly. By comparison, Richard was merely an ordinary man, and Los Angeles was much farther from here; the Ford would be far more convenient for him.
Thus, Richard didn’t refuse and drove the Ford away, embarking on his own journey.
Though they had no car, the speed of the two was anything but slow.
Soon, a lake in the wilderness appeared before their eyes.
“A familiar presence. Who are you?”
With a splash, the sound of surging water echoed as a drenched, long-haired man emerged from the lake. His cold gaze swept over them before settling on Su Yan.
“A natural-born demon’s body?”
At the sight of Su Yan, the Water Demon paused, then revealed the same greedy look as the Wind Demon.
However, compared to the Wind Demon, the Water Demon was clearly more cautious. Normally, anyone seeing him rise from the water would be horrified, yet these two stood calm as if they'd expected him.
Without another word, Gu Zhongyan raised his hand, unleashing a blast of ice!
In the blink of an eye, a frigid gleam froze the surface of the lake, forming a thick layer of ice before the Water Demon.
The Water Demon hadn't expected Gu Zhongyan to attack without warning. Yet, cunning as he was, he never relaxed his guard even amidst his confusion.
The instant Gu Zhongyan acted, the Water Demon transformed into a torrent, surging with tidal force as he raised a towering wave toward Gu Zhongyan.
But while the Water Demon was cautious, Gu Zhongyan knew his strengths and weaknesses, while the Water Demon knew nothing of Gu Zhongyan.
The rushing water froze into pillars midair, long before it could strike.
The Water Demon’s expression shifted, but before he could react, Su Yan moved as well.
Despite his youth, Su Yan was no longer an ordinary child after absorbing the Wind Demon’s power.
Whoosh!
Air currents howled, cutting winds whipping the frozen ice into a raging storm that swept forth, forming a cage of tempest to trap the Water Demon within.
Like the Wind Demon, the Water Demon was bound by his element. The chill settled upon his body, instantly coating him in a fine layer of frost, and in moments, he was encased in a sculpture of ice.
Seeing the Water Demon sealed away, Gu Zhongyan swiftly acted, brandishing his wand. The distinct magical array of Kamar-Taj unfurled beneath the Water Demon’s feet.
Recognizing the familiar array, the Water Demon’s eyelids twitched violently, demonic power surging within as he tried to shatter the ice and escape before the array could bind him.
Unfortunately, he faced not just Gu Zhongyan. As the array formed, Su Yan summoned even fiercer winds that twisted together, weaving into invisible chains which bound the icy sculpture.
The spiraling air currents locked the lake’s chill in place, compressing it ever tighter around the frozen demon.
Layer upon layer of cold and moisture, like ever-falling sand, thickened the Water Demon’s icy prison.
Pitifully, the Water Demon—who in the original story was the last to die—didn’t even understand his fate before being utterly sealed in ice.
By now, the magic array was fully formed, crimson lines constricting the Water Demon’s power like countless invisible chains.
Having experienced this once, Su Yan needed no reminder from Gu Zhongyan. Like a starving beast, he lunged into the array and seized the massive block of ice.
Boom!
The moment they touched, the Water Demon’s demonic energy rushed into Su Yan like water drawn from a well.
Wind and water interwove around Su Yan, complementing one another.
Thunder rolled and rain fell in torrents across the land. In Su Yan’s palm, wind and water converged—he now resembled a true child of the storm.
Sensing Su Yan’s power rise once more, Gu Zhongyan couldn’t help but marvel. Just moments ago, Su Yan was but a pale imitation of Storm. Now, he truly bore her mantle.
Should he absorb the Earth Demon’s power, he’d at least become a low-tier version of Storm.
This might sound unimpressive, but in truth, Storm is an Omega-level mutant, capable of controlling weather, sensing and manipulating meteorological phenomena.
Her range spans from subtle shifts in wind and rain to massive events such as blizzards, lightning, and even tornadoes. At her peak, she can summon solar winds and cosmic phenomena.
In later stories, Storm’s outbursts rival even Thor’s; the solar storms and cosmic floods she commands can annihilate a planet in an instant.
Even a low-tier Storm in the current Marvel universe would be enough to sweep aside the entire Defenders, save for Gu Zhongyan himself.
Even Tony Stark, recently become Iron Man, would be no match for Su Yan under normal circumstances.
After devouring the Water Demon, the two hurried toward the Earth Demon’s lair.
Compared to the tangible yet shapeless Water Demon and the intangible Wind Demon, the solid and substantial Earth Demon was much easier to deal with.
Both Gu Zhongyan’s magic and Su Yan’s control over air and water could harm him.
The Earth Demon’s only real strength was his resilience; it took a while of being pummeled by the duo before he was finally destroyed.
As before, Gu Zhongyan suppressed his power with a magic array, and Su Yan, now well-practiced, devoured him.
Absorbing three demons in succession, Su Yan’s strength swelled further.
Gu Zhongyan had expected that, after assimilating the Earth Demon, Su Yan would gain command over earth itself.
Instead, the fusion of the three powers coalesced into a force of natural elements.
Earth, water, and wind layered together, deepening Su Yan’s mastery over storms and granting him the ability to absorb nature’s elemental energy.
Simply put, the Earth Demon’s power didn’t grant him dominion over a new element, but bestowed a capacity for limitless growth, empowering him to increase his strength by drawing upon the elements.
As time passed, the more natural force he absorbed, the stronger he would become.
In theory, given enough time and power, he could one day rival Omega-level mutants like Storm.
