Chapter Forty-Two: Learning to Cherish His Wife
After changing into her clothes, she glanced at the extra one and, having no other choice, left it in the bathroom. She couldn't very well bring it downstairs. She washed her face, took several deep breaths to compose herself, and then went downstairs.
As soon as Zhou Yun saw Luo Yixia coming down, she called out to her. "Why are you up so early? Why not sleep a little longer?" she asked, pouring a glass of milk for Luo Yixia.
"I went to bed early last night. I woke up and just got up," Luo Yixia replied with a smile. In truth, it was the three consecutive alarms on her phone that had woken her. She couldn't possibly sleep in on the first day at someone else's house; she might be inexperienced in some things, but she knew at least this much about courtesy—Wenjing had nagged her about it more than once.
Zhou Yun had prepared sandwiches and eggs for breakfast. Luo Yixia reached for a boiled egg, ready to peel it, when suddenly another peeled egg was placed on her plate—Song Chengyi had just finished peeling one for her. As he withdrew his hand, he also took away the egg Luo Yixia had just picked up to peel. With his head lowered, he silently peeled another egg.
Yu Wenjing and Song Shaohui exchanged a knowing smile. Their son was finally showing some sense—this was a good sign.
When Song Chengyi tried to give her another egg, Luo Yixia clutched her plate tightly, refusing to let him put it down. "I'm full, you eat it yourself," she mumbled, her mouth still full of egg.
It was a little hard to swallow.
"Slow down," Song Chengyi said, withdrawing the egg and pushing the milk toward her. Luo Yixia quickly took a big gulp. She almost choked herself.
"Is that all you're eating? Are you full?" Zhou Yun asked with concern.
"I'm full, I really ate a lot," Luo Yixia replied, finishing the last of her milk.
Song Chengyi, saying nothing, ate the egg he had meant for her.
After breakfast, Luo Yixia helped tidy up and was even praised by Zhou Yun for it, which made her feel secretly delighted.
After seeing Song Shaohui off to work, Zhou Yun announced that she wanted to go to the mall with the two of them. Naturally, Mrs. Yu Wenjing wouldn't miss out on something like this. In the end, Song Chengyi drove while Luo Yixia sat in the passenger seat, looking as if she had resigned herself to fate, listening to the two mothers chatting away in the back.
At the mall, the two of them were swept inside by their mothers. As a girl, Luo Yixia did enjoy shopping, but doing so with two parents—it just felt a little awkward.
Later on, Zhou Yun slipped a bank card to Luo Yixia, telling her to spend as she liked. Embarrassed to refuse in public, Luo Yixia accepted it with the intention of returning it later.
Zhou Yun bought Luo Yixia plenty of clothes and didn't forget Song Chengyi either. Song Chengyi stood quietly to the side, making no comment; after all, his mother only picked out plain-colored clothes for him.
Luo Yixia looked at the mountain of shopping bags Song Chengyi was struggling to carry. It was clear just how much Zhou Yun had bought.
"When Song Chengyi was little, I always thought it would be wonderful if he were a girl. I could buy him dresses every day. It took me more than twenty years to finally fulfill that wish," Zhou Yun said, her eyes welling with sentimental tears, before turning to chat with Yu Wenjing.
Luo Yixia edged closer to Song Chengyi and asked quietly, "Are you tired? Do you want me to help you?"
Song Chengyi considered teasing her, but with both mothers present, he suppressed the urge and simply shook his head.
At noon, after finding a restaurant for lunch, the two mothers insisted they still hadn’t bought anything for the children's upcoming trip. Luo Yixia began to dawdle, claiming she was tired and didn’t want to walk anymore. In the end, she and Song Chengyi rested in the car together.
