Chapter Thirty-Two: A House, a Car, and Savings
She stood up in excitement, her voice trembling, “Mom... Mom... you’ve really misunderstood. I was asleep because I didn’t sleep well last night, I was just tired... It’s not what you think.” Her small face was flushed a deep red.
“Oh, I see…” Zhou Yun said, disappointment written all over her face. Then she looked sternly at her own son. “I’ve told you, Xiaxia is still young. Why do you insist on pestering her at night? Look at the child, she’s gotten so thin lately.”
Song Chengyi felt utterly wronged. When had he ever pestered her? It was clearly she who pestered him every morning.
Luo Yixia lowered her head. At first, she genuinely hadn’t understood, but when it came to matters like this—even if she hadn’t experienced it herself, she’d read enough age-inappropriate novels and watched anime to know what was going on. She understood all too well now, especially since she and Song Chengyi had... well, that happened... Though she’d been drunk and couldn’t remember...
It was obvious that both Yu Wenjing and Zhou Yun were disappointed. As for what had really happened, perhaps others weren’t clear, but how could Song Chengyi not know? Nothing had actually happened between him and Luo Yixia... Everything had just fallen into place by coincidence, and he hadn’t had the chance to explain yet.
That day had indeed been a coincidence. He hadn’t expected his mother and hers to barge in, and they’d happened to see... He remembered Zhou Yun grabbing Yu Wenjing’s hand at that moment.
“My family has a house, a car, savings, and I’m willing to prioritize safety. If we fall into the water, I’ll sink first. If you find me a nuisance, I can die first.”
Song Chengyi was so stunned, he didn’t know what to say for a long time.
Clearly nothing had happened, yet when he saw the startled girl beside him, he somehow found himself agreeing. Song Chengyi still wasn’t sure if he actually liked Luo Yixia. He simply seemed accustomed to her presence, accustomed to her noise.
Song Chengyi knew everyone had misunderstood, but he didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he felt... rather good about it.
Zhou Yun comforted both Yu Wenjing and herself, “We’re just too anxious, Xiaxia is still young. There’s no rush.”
Though she said this, she sighed softly. What should have been a warm meal had suddenly become awkward, an odd tension filling the air.
Luo Yixia now fully understood what they had been implying, and she was mortified.
After the meal, she abandoned her usual laziness and eagerly ran off to help clear and wash the dishes. But Yu Wenjing and Zhou Yun quickly ushered her out.
“All right, clumsy hands and feet, go keep Chengyi company instead. Don’t get in the way here,” Yu Wenjing said, pushing Luo Yixia out of the kitchen.
Song Chengyi was sitting on the sofa in the living room, watching TV. Luo Yixia, having been driven out, could only obediently take a seat beside him.
Neither of them spoke.
After a long while, Luo Yixia searched for a topic and asked, “Now that you’re on break, what are you planning to do?”
“I was thinking of working at the hospital for a bit, but school’s about to start again, so I might just stay at home,” Song Chengyi said, flipping through channels with the remote.
“Oh,” Luo Yixia replied, and the conversation ended there.
When their mothers came out, they saw the two sitting together on the sofa, each absorbed in their own world.
“Chengyi, Xiaxia, Wenjing and I were talking. Since you’re both on summer break and at home, why not take the opportunity to go on a honeymoon?” Zhou Yun suggested.
“Huh? Honeymoon?” Luo Yixia was visibly surprised, while Song Chengyi remained expressionless.
“Yes, you just registered your marriage. Staying at home every day is so boring. Go out and have some fun,” Yu Wenjing urged, echoing the suggestion.
