Chapter 158: The School's Supreme Treasure
Yu Bin led her into the classroom, and Luo Yixia felt as though every single step was a trial of endurance, with the gaze of the entire class converging on her.
There were still a few books on Luo Yixia's desk, along with a stack of paper densely covered in notes, and a black gel pen resting nearby. He must have left in quite a hurry.
"Old Song will be back very soon, just wait a moment," Yu Bin said, turning back abruptly as if he had just remembered something. "Sister-in-law, would you like anything to drink?"
Luo Yixia coughed awkwardly. Because of Yu Bin's address, the expressions on everyone's faces in the classroom changed unpredictably...
"You should just call me by my name..."
"It's fine. Calling you by your name wouldn't show proper respect," Yu Bin started with his fast talking again.
"Really! My name is fine..."
"No, no, no... Calling you by your name would mean I'm showing disrespect to my superiors."
Luo Yixia: "..."
Luo Yixia finally closed her mouth, unwilling to argue with him any further. With so many people in the class, she would talk to him about it in private later.
"I'm not thirsty."
"Alright then. I'm going back to review. If I don't do well on these finals, I have no idea which remote corner they'll send me to for my internship next year," Yu Bin sighed as he walked away.
Before stepping into this classroom, Luo Yixia had thought Gan Yanyan and the others were making a fuss over nothing. Only now did she realize the oppressive atmosphere all around her. Luo Yixia kept having the feeling that they might suddenly erupt and tear her apart with their bare hands.
"Are you a sophomore junior?" Suddenly, a girl in front turned around and struck up a conversation with Luo Yixia.
"Hello, Senior," Luo Yixia replied.
"Song Chenyi always takes half a day to come back whenever he goes to the office. Are you going to wait the whole time?"
From that tone, Luo Yixia could tell right away that she was being chased off.
"Yeah, he asked me to wait for him," Luo Yixia smiled.
The girl gave her a faint look, and then her gaze swept over the review materials Luo Yixia had just placed on the desk.
"Are you here to review?"
"Yeah, our class couldn't grab any spots in the study room."
The girl seemed to want to ask more questions, but everyone was busy reviewing, so she eventually sat back down properly.
Luo Yixia turned her head and looked out the window, wondering when Song Chenyi would return.
Silently, she opened her book and began to read.
Nearly half an hour passed. Luo Yixia glanced at the time; it was already three o'clock.
She immediately felt a pang of regret. If she had known, she would have sent him a message when she arrived.
Luo Yixia hadn't known that his class had lectures scheduled for the afternoon.
When... some professor walked in, Luo Yixia, who had been studying intently, was stunned. It was so awkward now...
Should she go out? But walking out right now would draw way too much attention!
Just as she was hesitating back and forth.
"Sorry, I'm late," a familiar voice rang out from outside the door.
Luo Yixia raised her head abruptly and saw him standing by the door, his eyes fixed on the professor.
"It's fine, hurry on in," the professor nodded, then went back to flipping through the textbook.
Song Chenyi kept his head down. As he passed Yu Bin, Yu Bin stuck out a foot and tripped him slightly: "Your wife is here."
Only then did Song Chenyi react, lifting his head to look at his seat.
Luo Yixia was looking at him too.
Everyone facing Song Chenyi clearly saw that perpetually expressionless, poker face actually break into... a smile?
Song Chenyi curved his lips, walked over, and sat back down in his seat.
"When did you get here?"
"A little under half an hour ago," Luo Yixia lowered her voice.
"I went to the office."
"Yu Bin told me. Just listen to the lecture," Luo Yixia decided not to disturb him, and then helped him take out his textbooks.
"Okay."
Throughout the entire class, Luo Yixia didn't speak a single word to Song Chenyi, quietly reading her own book.
Of course, she didn't understand a single thing the professor was saying either.
"Are you thirsty? Do you want something to drink?" Song Chenyi asked the girl beside him in a soft voice.
"My throat is a bit dry, I want some water," Luo Yixia replied.
"Okay." Song Chenyi stood up to fetch some hot water.
When he handed it to Luo Yixia, he noticed her fingertips were icy cold.
He frowned slightly, his expression turning serious: "Why are your hands so cold?"
Only then did Song Chenyi properly look her over. Because she had been sitting in the chair the whole time, she was only wearing a single layer of thermal leggings in such freezing weather, and her coat was left wide open.
He gently but firmly turned her body toward him: "Why are you wearing so much less? Aren't you cold? Button up your coat."
Though his tone sounded like he was giving orders, as he spoke, he was already helping her button her coat.
Then he stood up and walked over to Yu Bin, lowering his head to mutter something to him.
She saw Yu Bin hand something furry over to Song Chenyi with an extremely reluctant expression.
It was a rechargeable hand warmer in a cute shade of pink.
Song Chenyi placed it on Luo Yixia's lap.
"It's so cold today, yet you wear so little. Do you want to get sick? Finals are right around the corner, do you want to fail a course?" Song Chenyi's tone carried deep displeasure.
Even though he kept his voice low, Luo Yixia still knew he was angry.
"It's actually not that cold..." Luo Yixia smiled.
But after saying that, when she saw Song Chenyi's stern face, she immediately changed her tune: "Yanyan and the others dress like this too. If I wore too many layers, they'd make fun of me."
Only then did Song Chenyi stop talking.
With hot water and a hand warmer, it was already much warmer.
Actually, during the previous class, Luo Yixia's legs had frozen stiff; she had been genuinely cold.
Song Chenyi stared at her for a moment. Luo Yixia had no idea what he was looking at, and felt a little uneasy.
"What's wrong? Is there something on my face?"
Song Chenyi pressed his lips together, said nothing, reached into the desk drawer for a pack of wet wipes, pulled one out, and wiped Luo Yixia's lips.
"If you don't like it, don't wear it." After saying that, as if feeling it wasn't quite right, he added: "I don't like you wearing these chemical substances either."
Luo Yixia acknowledged softly, said nothing more, and let him wipe off all the lipstick.
"You're here for me to see, you don't need to care what other people think."
In an instant, warmth flooded Luo Yixia's heart. Actually, he knew everything. He knew she didn't like makeup, he knew why she had worn makeup to come here, and he knew why she had dressed so lightly.
Luo Yixia nodded heavily.
"Drink some water," Song Chenyi prompted.
Luo Yixia opened the cup, took a few sips, wiped her mouth, and then asked Song Chenyi, "Do you want some?"
Song Chenyi wasn't actually thirsty, but he didn't refuse either. He nodded, took the cup, and drank a couple of sips from the exact spot she had just drank from.
If Luo Yixia had looked closely at that moment, she would have seen that the thick-skinned rogue's ear tips were bright red.
Unable to endure the cold any longer, Yu Bin took advantage of the classmates trickling out to the restroom and scurried over.
"You two are enough, showing affection right here in the classroom."
"What? Are you jealous?" Unexpectedly, the usually taciturn Song Chenyi shot back with a retort.
Now, the class's attention was drawn once again.
"Sister-in-law, you need to keep him in line. What he just said was too much," Yu Bin intentionally wailed pitifully toward Luo Yixia.
Song Chenyi looked at Luo Yixia as well.
"Don't... don't go around calling me that."
"I'll give you the key points for the final exam later," Song Chenyi suddenly blurted out out of nowhere.
Both Yu Bin and Luo Yixia were slightly stunned.
Perhaps his brain had been frozen solid, but Yu Bin reacted almost instantly.
"Thank you, Big Brother!"
Hearing this, Luo Yixia understood. So Song Chenyi's mood had inexplicably improved... simply because Yu Bin called her sister-in-law?
Song Chenyi let out a hum of acknowledgment.
Perhaps because Yu Bin was being too noisy, several guys who were usually somewhat close to Song Chenyi gathered around.
"I've been watching for a while now, Old Song, when did you get yourself a girlfriend?"
"Yeah, yeah, Old Song. You're usually a three-point-line person in school—office, cafeteria, classroom. When did you go and hook up with a junior?"
"She hooked up with me," Song Chenyi dropped those light words, plunging the classroom back into silence.
"..."
"Tell us about it, Junior. How did you manage to hook the school's prized treasure?" A guy smiled and teased.
"Ha... haha, maybe... my skin is just thicker?" Luo Yixia said while looking at Song Chenyi.
Song Chenyi couldn't help but chuckle first.
Luo Yixia gave him an exasperated sideways glance. It was too embarrassing; she had basically lost face in front of another class.
"I've always liked her, but before, because she was too young, it wasn't the right time to make a move," Song Chenyi began talking nonsense with a completely straight face.
Luo Yixia knew he was trying to bail her out.
"I couldn't tell, Old Song. No wonder you've always kept women at arm's length. Tsk tsk, childhood sweethearts really are different."
Guys were carefree and didn't nitpick over details. After exchanging a few words, they all treated Luo Yixia like their buddy's wife, opening their hearts to her completely.
The few girls in the class weren't very happy about it, but hearing Song Chenyi admit himself that he was the one who chased Luo Yixia—though they still couldn't quite accept it—the hostility from earlier had vanished.
Xiang Xingluo returned from the office to find the classroom in utter chaos.
"Is no one reviewing?" Xiang Xingluo's voice wasn't loud, but the entire class immediately quieted down.
If there was a legend at University A, it had to be Song Chenyi. But if Xiang Xingluo had arrived a few years earlier or later, she would have been a legend too; she just happened to overlap with Song Chenyi.
"Xingluo," a girl called out to her anxiously.
"Hmm?"
As the crowd gradually dispersed, Xiang Xingluo finally saw the girl sitting beside Song Chenyi.
She was the girl who had peeked from outside during the play rehearsals, the girl Song Chenyi had chased after, the girl for whom Song Chenyi had played the piano on stage.
Xiang Xingluo merely glanced at her faintly, then walked back to her seat in the middle of the room.
"Old Song, it's settled then. When you have time, you're treating us. Getting single-free is a must-treat, that's our class rule," a guy laughed again.
"You guys go eat, I'll cover the bill," Song Chenyi said, his tone flat, but unable to suppress the joy in his words.
"Is he really that pumped?"
After a joyful and lively commotion, everyone returned to their seats and continued reviewing.
Luo Yixia finally remembered what Old Sheng had mentioned that morning.
She wanted to speak up, but seeing the quiet surroundings and everyone deep in review, she ended up writing a line of words on a piece of paper.
[Our class is having another gathering tonight, and our counselor wants to invite you. Do you have time?]
After finishing, she pushed the note over to Song Chenyi.
Song Chenyi glanced at it, lowered his head, and wrote: [Okay.]
