Chapter 133: Undeniably My Beloved Husband
Luo Yixia slumped onto her desk, feeling as though life had lost all meaning. Heavens above, why had her luck been so wretched lately?
Vaguely, she heard the sound of voices from the row behind her.
"He Zhen, have you checked the school forum?" a male student asked.
Though Luo Yixia remained slumped on her desk, she perked up her ears. After all, she was one of the protagonists of that drama.
"Hm? What is it?" He Zhen’s voice sounded languid, as if he had just woken from a nap.
He Zhen lazily picked up his phone, glanced at it, and tossed it back to the boy beside him. "Oh, a misunderstanding." He then rested his head back down and continued talking.
Hearing his reaction, Luo Yixia felt as though she had been making a mountain out of a molehill. People at school were always bored, constantly chasing shadows and making things up. If he couldn't be bothered to react, why should she? It was just a misunderstanding, after all.
Thinking this, she felt a little more at ease. She hadn't done anything wrong; she had nothing to fear.
A few minutes later, Gan Yanyan came over to nudge her excitedly.
"What is it?" Luo Yixia asked, her voice listless.
"The post was deleted."
"Oh." Luo Yixia wasn't particularly surprised; perhaps the person who posted it had developed a conscience.
"Who deleted it, I wonder?" Gan Yanyan muttered, but Luo Yixia didn't have the energy to dwell on it. She was busy wondering if Song Chengyi had seen it, and if he would be angry with her if he had.
For the next few days, Luo Yixia threw herself into her studies. She caught a glimpse of Song Chengyi in the cafeteria occasionally, but he showed no reaction. By the looks of it, he seemed to know nothing at all.
After the midterms came the autumn sports meet. The sports representative was a tall boy whom Luo Yixia only ever saw during the games; they never interacted otherwise.
"Luo Yixia, you really need to sign up for a few events." This was the third time he had come over today.
Lin Ya was tall and had signed up for several events, and the others had also chosen a few, but only Luo Yixia had managed to remain uninvolved.
"How about the four of you do a relay, and you, Luo Yixia, can sign up for the 1,500 meters?" Before she could even answer, he had forcefully filled in her name.
"1... 1,500 meters? Isn't that a bit much?" Luo Yixia felt her voice trembling.
"There's also the 3,000 meters; do you want to run that instead?" the boy asked with a grin.
Luo Yixia shook her head decisively.
Once the sports rep had left, Luo Yixia lamented, "1,500 meters! My legs will snap. I’m someone who barely exercises!"
"Oh, give it a rest. Because of you, we had to add another relay event. Lin Ya is running the 3,000, plus the 800-meter dash and the long jump. You should just be content," Gan Yanyan teased without mercy.
"I just went to Teacher Sheng’s office, and she said the midterms are next week, so we won't have the usual break; we'll be having classes at school," Xu Jiayu whispered to them.
When this was announced, Luo Yixia wasn't the only one sighing.
"You all better study hard this week."
Taking advantage of the break between classes, Luo Yixia sent a message to Song Zeming about the lack of a break this week. Song Chengyi replied quickly, saying he knew, and that was it.
Luo Yixia stared at the few words he sent. He had replied to her messages for the past two days, so he must not know about the forum post—otherwise, he would be angry. Last time, when Yu Bin had just made a passing comment, he had nearly scared everyone at the table to death. If he found out about this, there was no telling how he would punish her.
Song Chengyi had been quite busy these past few days. The midterms were school-wide, and Luo Yixia knew he had to study hard, so she didn't disturb him with messages.
She spent her own days reviewing earnestly, even reading until the early hours of the morning. Honestly, though, hard work doesn't always equal success. For someone like her who only started studying three weeks before the exam, it was like throwing a small pebble into the ocean—it wouldn't even make a ripple.
After the make-up classes on Sunday, there were no classes in the afternoon. Luo Yixia ran into Song Chengyi outside. Her friends, being sensible, gave them some space.
Because they were quite conspicuous at school, Luo Yixia stood beside him, maintaining a proper distance. Everyone already knew they were acquainted, so standing together for a few words shouldn't matter, but mostly, Luo Yixia had just missed him terribly over the last few days.
"Exams are coming up. How is your review going?" Song Chengyi asked.
"Mm, I'm studying very hard," Luo Yixia said, unable to come up with anything else.
Song Chengyi sighed slightly, looking very helpless. "Mm, don't rush. You'll make progress if you study slowly."
"Okay," Luo Yixia nodded repeatedly.
Song Chengyi stared at her, saying nothing more. As for other matters, they could wait until after the midterms; after all, some debts had to be settled.
"Do you have classes later?" Luo Yixia knew many departments had full-day classes.
"Yes, I have to go to the lab. The experiment isn't finished yet."
"Then go ahead and get busy. The temperature has dropped lately, so make sure to keep warm," Luo Yixia couldn't help but add.
Song Chengyi smiled faintly. "That’s something I should be saying to you."
Luo Yixia looked up and smiled at him.
"I'm going now then," she said, pointing behind her.
"Mm," Song Chengyi replied. But just as she turned to leave, he couldn't help but reach out and ruffle her hair. "Be good."
He let go and walked away...
Oh my, her idol was just too perfect! Luo Yixia looked around cautiously; few people noticed her, so she let the smile on her face bloom without restraint.
As soon as he left, her friends immediately surrounded her.
"I didn't expect to be fed such a mouthful of dog food," Lin Ya said, slinging an arm around Luo Yixia's shoulder.
"You two don't even try to be discreet at school! I just wanted to be Xia Xia's hair," Gan Yanyan added, looking lovesick.
"That's enough, you two," Luo Yixia said, though she was clearly delighted.
A week passed in a flash. After the exams came the sports meet, followed by a three-day break—the thought alone made her happy.
Although everyone had gossiped a bit when the forum post first broke, it was deleted so quickly that it didn't have much impact. Coinciding with the midterms, everyone was in a state of high tension, and the incident was soon forgotten.
Luo Yixia spent her days reviewing English, mathematics, and medical knowledge. Her brain felt like mush. When she wrote practice papers at night, she would be overcome with sleepiness and felt like giving up countless times. But whenever that happened, she would sneakily take out her phone and put on her headphones to listen to a recording of Song Chengyi, which would energize her like an adrenaline shot.
Of course, this feeling didn't last long, but Luo Yixia still felt a thrill every time she listened, especially knowing there were others nearby desperately cramming—it felt like she was doing something illicit. Besides, Song Chengyi’s voice was just so intoxicating; no matter how many times she listened, she never got tired of it.
That night, Luo Yixia didn't stay up too late and went to bed early.
The next day, when she went to her assigned exam hall, she was surprised to find she had been placed in Song Chengyi’s classroom, along with Gan Yanyan and a few other classmates.
When Luo Yixia arrived, Song Chengyi was already in his seat, listening to music with headphones on. Her heart fluttered; she could already hear the squeals and whispers of other girls in the room. She checked her exam number, scanning the rows one by one.
Song Chengyi looked down to grab his pen, and when he looked up, he was quite surprised. Luo Yixia saw herself getting closer and closer to him, and then she stopped right in front of him.
"You're sitting here?" Song Chengyi raised an eyebrow.
Luo Yixia looked at her exam number, then at the number stuck to his desk. She shook her head, feeling a slight pang of disappointment.
"The seat next to you," she said, sitting down.
"Do well on the exam," Song Chengyi said, gathering his things before leaving.
Luo Yixia was ecstatic. Being able to see Song Chengyi before the exam made her feel like she could score an extra fifty points! It was just a pity she was one seat away from his desk—sitting in the seat of a top student and her crush, she felt she could have scored even higher.
Later, a chubby girl sat in the seat, but Luo Yixia didn't know her and didn't strike up a conversation.
The first subject was English. Luo Yixia was decent at it; after all, she had gotten in on her own merits and a bit of dumb luck. When the period ended, she stretched. It was fine, just average. The invigilator was very strict, and when she finished, she saw many students waiting outside.
Luo Yixia handed in her paper and went to the restroom with Gan Yanyan. She didn't see Song Chengyi outside.
The next session was mathematics. Luo Yixia hadn't seen other medical schools requiring math exams, but she sighed—the school was just being willful. She scratched her head for the entire period; what kind of nonsense questions were these? In the end, she left two big problems blank—that was her limit. Although the invigilator had been nodding off at the front for the whole period, there was no one she knew nearby, so she couldn't even cheat.
"Alright, if you're finished, hand in your papers," the teacher said without moving from his seat.
Seeing that the invigilator wasn't being strict, many students from the class came back. As Luo Yixia prepared to hand in her paper, she realized she had forgotten to write her name and exam number. She stood up, pen in hand, to fill them in.
Just then, someone walked toward her, intending to pass by her seat to get to the one inside. Luo Yixia turned sideways to continue writing. The person paused beside her for a moment, then reached out and tapped two spots on her multiple-choice section.
Luo Yixia froze. She looked up, and Song Chengyi had already returned to his seat. She looked at the spots he had tapped and her eyes lit up. She quickly changed her answers and handed in the paper.
She was absolutely thrilled. Truly, he was the best husband ever.
