Volume One, Chapter 14: Farewell to the Yu Family

Yu Yue’s tone was teasing, making it hard to discern her true intentions.
In Wang Xinran’s eyes flickered a trace of unease. Deep down, she didn’t want Wu Xiang, that dead weight, to interrupt the precious moments between her and Yu Yue. Yet, she also feared that if she spoke her mind, the cold, stern young man before her might think she was ungrateful.
Just as Wang Xinran hesitated, Wu Xiang angrily yanked her backward, nearly causing her to stumble and fall.
“Xinran, don’t go with that guy! We don’t even know him—who knows what he’s really after? I think he has bad intentions toward you!”
By then, the arm Wu Xiang had injured was already wrapped in some cloth, though no one knew where it had come from.
Wang Xinran was furious. This clueless sycophant—she secretly wished Yu Yue really did have ill intentions toward her, just so she could confront him. She glanced cautiously at the still teasing expression on the young man’s face. Seeing no cold reaction to Wu Xiang’s words, she quietly relaxed.
Turning her face, a faint flush of anger surfaced. “Wu Xiang, I really didn’t expect you to be like this. It was Cheng Yue who saved our lives just now, and you have the nerve to slander him!”
“If you’re that kind of person, then let’s have no dealings from now on!”
By the end, Wang Xinran’s expression shifted perfectly into one of disappointment. Her resolute tone immediately darkened Wu Xiang’s face.
Aside from his selfishness, Wu Xiang genuinely thought Yu Yue was dangerous. Just seeing how effortlessly he dispatched zombies with a single strike made him uneasy about his goddess walking alone with Yu Yue.
But now, Wang Xinran’s heart and eyes were all on that pretty boy, even to the point of turning against him for Yu Yue.
He could only soften his tone and carefully soothe her.
“Xinran, I didn’t mean it like that. You know I only said those things because I care about you. I said the wrong thing—please don’t take it to heart. Will you forgive me?”
“Well…”
Wang Xinran was somewhat swayed. It wasn’t that she cared much about Wu Xiang; it was just that these times were dangerous, and having one more loyal protector who didn’t care about his own life naturally added to her safety.
Without hesitating long, her expression softened. “If that’s the case, it’s good you realize your mistake. Now go apologize to Cheng Yue. If he forgives you, we’ll leave together.”

The apology was naturally reluctant. Yu Yue caught the shadow of resentment and bitterness in Wu Xiang’s eyes as he bowed his head to apologize.
Hmph, a bit surprising—Wu Xiang seemed to have a dark, unhinged streak after all. In their past life, these two hadn’t met Cheng Yue and so Wu Xiang had quietly remained Wang Xinran’s sycophant.
Who knew now, with her stirring things up, whether Wu Xiang would remain a sycophant or turn into a mad dog.
With the decision made, the three, each harboring their own thoughts, formed a temporary team and prepared to leave the mall.
Wang Xinran clung to Yu Yue’s arm, but Yu Yue skillfully evaded her grasp without showing it. Wu Xiang followed behind, glaring viciously at their backs.
Veins throbbed on his forehead, his back teeth clenched as if about to shatter. His increasingly pale face made him resemble a terrifying demon from hell.
Why was it that, after all this time, it was she who took care of Wang Xinran, yet within less than an hour, the goddess had fallen for a pretty boy?
He had invested so much and truly liked Wang Xinran; otherwise, he wouldn’t have willingly been her sycophant.
As noon approached, the low-level zombies on the street were few, deterred by the sunlight. Yu Yue dealt with them easily, barely needing to use her powers.
Along the way, Wang Xinran and Wu Xiang remained relatively quiet. Though they were terrified when Yu Yue’s blade splattered blood three feet away, they sensibly covered their mouths to avoid making noise.
After walking a long distance, their faces darkened further. Initially, they still clung to the faint hope that this was just a small-scale disaster.
But after witnessing the horrific ruin outside, they finally accepted that the once-lawful society had collapsed. The apocalypse had arrived, and from now on, only the strong would prevail.
Wang Xinran’s gaze toward Yu Yue grew more fervent. Clinging to such a powerful protector was the surest guarantee of her future safety.
Besides mere protection, she wanted Cheng Yue to belong entirely to her, to love her completely—otherwise, the fear of abandonment would always linger.
Her unwavering, determined stare was hard to ignore. Besides a bit of disgust, it had little other effect.
After a long walk, they reached the bustling city center. Yu Yue stopped before her destination: the Austleton International Hotel.

On the eve of the last apocalypse, the Yu family had hosted a business banquet at this very hotel. After the banquet, the five members of the Yu family had rested here.
When Yu Yue awakened her powers that day, her first thought was of them. She hurried here and indeed found the Yu family, exhausted after days of hardship.
This reunion marked a turning point in Yu Yue’s tragic life—the white laboratory, the cold iron bed, the shackled limbs, the endless experiments, the phantom pain of surgical cuts on her skin.
The disheveled Yu family in the hotel lobby initially showed nothing but disgust when they saw Yu Yue. But when they learned she had awakened ice powers and could easily dispatch zombies, they gladly accepted her, saying they were all family.
At that moment, she was deeply moved, believing her family was finally embracing her. Little did she know that the next step would lead her into hell.
“Family”—such a bitterly ironic phrase.
Crossing the hotel threshold, Yu Yue’s eyes shone with undisguised excitement.
This time, she would have a new life—and she would make the Yu family pay dearly for their blood debts.
The hotel lobby’s power had long since failed. Groups of three or four people huddled together, faces marked by fear or numbness, many stained with the stench of dark blood.
At a glance, Yu Yue immediately locked onto the Yu family, positioned at the center of the lobby.
Father Yu Shenxing, mother Su Yun, eldest brother Yu Lin, second brother Yu Han, and little sister Yu Jiaojiao—five in all, orderly and intact.
Compared to when she had last seen them in disgrace, this was only the first day of the apocalypse. Except for slightly disheveled clothing, they still maintained a basic dignity.
As Yu Yue entered, all eyes turned toward her warily, fearing another man-eating monster.
Only after realizing she was human like them did they relax and quietly resume their numb wait for rescue.
