Volume One, Chapter Seventeen: Administering an Injection Doesn’t Always Require a Syringe...
The Next Day, Hospital.
Ji Yao had made an appointment with Dr. He Yancheng. When her name was called and she entered, it was clear she was no longer as nervous as before. However, when He Yancheng saw her sitting on the examination chair, his intense aura seemed to dissolve and seep into her very breath.
“Why didn’t you come last night?”
Last night, downstairs in the residential complex, she had received a call from He Yancheng but hung up without a word. At the time, Xie Huaijin had been somewhat suspicious and asked about it, but she brushed it off, saying it was a scam call.
Perhaps because the investment topic intrigued Xie Huaijin, she had stayed close to Ji Yao all night, making it difficult for her to break free even in the middle of the night.
Ji Yao sighed deeply, her expression growing more serious. “You’re a doctor; you can’t abuse your authority. We agreed today would be the day. How could you call yesterday instead?”
“How do you know I’m abusing my power?” The man leaned slightly forward. When she looked up, she saw his exceptionally handsome, perfectly chiseled face. His thin lips pressed into a line, and his proud chin spoke of indifference. “I’m not limited to using syringes to give you injections.”
Suddenly, Ji Yao felt a wave of heat engulf her head, coursing through her entire body...
Just then, the door to the consultation room was pushed open. Song Weiying stood at the entrance, a trace of distracted thought flickering in her eyes before her gaze settled on He Yancheng. “Dr. He, the internal medicine department just sent in a very difficult patient. His condition is quite unusual, and we’re unsure how to handle it. Would you mind taking a look?”
He Yancheng’s expression and tone were calm and unhurried. “Don’t you see I still have a patient here?”
Song Weiying’s eyes darkened slightly. “She’s just here for an injection, right? I can give it; you should go see to the more complicated case.”
At the hospital, He Yancheng was well aware of his role. This was not his domain to command; patient needs came first.
He lowered his gaze and glanced at Ji Yao with a cold, unreadable expression, the slightest upward inflection at the end of his words: “Finish the injection, then wait for me before you leave.”
Ji Yao said nothing but nodded instinctively. Several times before, after giving her injections, He Yancheng would prepare medication specifically for her. Having learned from those past experiences, she decided today to wait in the consultation room for He Yancheng after Song Weiying gave her the injection.
After He Yancheng left, Song Weiying closed the door behind him and, with a hint of veiled mockery, glanced sideways at Ji Yao. “You still dare to say you have no private affairs with Dr. He?”
Ji Yao sighed. “No.”
A fleeting shadow of gloom crossed Song Weiying’s eyes. “Dr. He is cold to colleagues and other patients alike, but he’s different with you. I really don’t understand what he sees in you!”
Looks, height, figure... they were all about the same! Song Weiying was even much younger. He never so much as glanced at Song Weiying in the hospital, yet he watched Ji Yao constantly. At the thought, envy crept over Song Weiying’s finely sculpted face.
Ji Yao stared at Song Weiying, frowning, and said, “Dr. Song, it’s true Dr. He is single, but I am different. If you spread such baseless rumors, it will cause me great trouble.”
“You know it’s trouble? Then stay away from Dr. He! There are plenty of doctors here; giving injections isn’t only something Dr. He can do. Why not find another doctor?”
Ji Yao knew what Song Weiying was thinking. As long as it wasn’t He Yancheng giving her injections, Song Weiying would have no objection to any other doctor. But why should she listen to her? Her relationship with He Yancheng was completely pure. Changing doctors just because of Song Weiying’s words would be proof she was hiding something. Besides, there was no way to explain it to He Yancheng either, which would only trap her in a dilemma.
Song Weiying didn’t wait for a response and began preparing the medication. Ji Yao, with her back turned, glanced back just as Song Weiying drew the medicine into the syringe. She immediately noticed that the medicine was not the one He Yancheng usually used for her.
Ji Yao stood up at once. “Dr. Song, are you sure you have the right medication?”
Song Weiying looked at her with disdain. “You’re overthinking it. I’m a doctor; do you think I don’t know if I made a mistake? Why would I need you to tell me?”
“No, Dr. He usually doesn’t use this medicine. You must be mistaken!”
If Song Weiying had stopped to check, Ji Yao might have let it go. But now, Song Weiying insisted without even glancing at the syringe, clearly confident that this was not the medicine He Yancheng had given her before.
Song Weiying’s eyebrows slanted downward. Approaching Ji Yao, she tried to grab her hand. “I’m telling you, I’m not wrong!”
“What’s going on?”
Perhaps their argument had become heated enough to go unnoticed as the consultation room door opened. He Yancheng entered. Ji Yao immediately accused, “Dr. He, you’re just in time. Please check the medication in Dr. Song’s syringe. I think she swapped it.”
He Yancheng’s prompt return was unexpected by Song Weiying!
Her hand holding the syringe grew cold as He Yancheng took it from her. Neither by color nor smell could he detect any difference from the usual medicine. Cautiously, he called a nurse in to send it to the professional drug testing department for thorough analysis.
When the nurse returned with the report and handed it to He Yancheng, Song Weiying’s chest tightened, and her fingers clenched involuntarily.
“Dr. He, what I did…”
“Dispose of the remaining medicine immediately. Never use it again.”
Song Weiying was stunned, barely registering his words. She had indeed switched the medicine. As a doctor, she knew that to the naked eye, the difference was invisible; only professional testing could reveal it. But since the report was out, why hadn’t He Yancheng blamed her? Could it be… even professional tests hadn’t found anything wrong with her medicine?
Impossible! Song Weiying’s eyes darted around, finally concluding that someone must have helped her.
She stared at him, a hint of surprise in her eyes. “Right! So from now on, Ji Yao’s injections…”
“Out!”
Song Weiying heard the impatience in He Yancheng’s voice. Gritting her teeth, she endured it and turned to close the consultation room door behind her as she left.
Ji Yao approached He Yancheng and looked at the drug test report on the table, stunned. “The medicine is fine?”
“There is an issue, but it’s minor.”
Ji Yao furrowed her brow, not quite understanding. “What do you mean?”
He Yancheng straightened his spine coldly, then turned to her. “She used the medicine I had given you last time after your injection—the batch I originally intended to discard. She must have tidied my desk, found it, and put it in the refrigerator. Today, she used the refrigerated medicine.”
No wonder Song Weiying hated her contact with He Yancheng so much. It turned out Song Weiying usually helped tidy He Yancheng’s desk. He was very particular about others touching his things. If Song Weiying was allowed to organize his office, their private relationship must be quite close.
Ji Yao’s fingers paused, her expression slowly darkening.
...
In the hospital corridor.
After Song Weiying left, she saw the nurse who had just delivered the drug test report waiting in the hallway. Curious but determined not to stop, she continued walking. As she passed the nurse, the nurse suddenly perked up and called after her.
“Sister Weiying, I already burned the real drug test report. Don’t worry, Dr. He will never find out you switched the medicine!”
Song Weiying stopped in her tracks, warning herself to stay calm. “Why did you help me?”
The nurse walked alongside her. “You’re naturally beautiful, a top student, and the hospital’s flower. I’ve attended to that patient Ji Yao twice, and I know she’s married. She can’t compare to you. She’s not worthy of Dr. He. Someone as outstanding as Dr. He deserves someone like you!”
Song Weiying had been well protected by her family, living a smooth life without facing the harsh realities of society. In her mind, people obeying her was natural. So she didn’t doubt the nurse’s words at all.
Song Weiying became even more composed. “You’re just a nurse. How could you have the power to change the drug test report?”
The nurse smiled faintly. “I don’t, but my husband does. He works in the drug testing department.”
“Good. When you get home, have your husband send me his resume. Next week, he should prepare to become the head of the drug testing department!”
The nurse beamed, showing her tiger teeth. “Thank you, Sister Weiying!”
Song Weiying had long investigated this woman. The daughter of the Song Corporation’s heiress, no one knew what possessed her to come to the hospital as an intern. Only today did Song Weiying understand: it was all for He Yancheng!
