The front door opened from outside, and Fu Yunshen walked in. He paused at the sight of the living room, then looked toward Fu Yunchen, a trace of confusion flashing through his eyes.

Fu Yunchen avoided his gaze and rose at once. “Miss Lu, think about what I suggested that day. What Fu Yunshen cannot give you, I can. I’ll be leaving now.”

With that, Fu Yunchen headed for the door. When he passed Fu Yunshen, he did not even spare him a glance.

Only after Fu Yunchen had left did Wang Ruoxi lift her head. Her eyes were swollen, and her makeup was streaked. Choking back sobs, she said, “Sister Xiaoyu, Fu Yunchen doesn’t remember me anymore. He even yelled at me just now and was so mean. Boo-hoo…”

Fu Yunshen and I exchanged a knowing glance. He went upstairs, leaving only Wang Ruoxi and me in the spacious living room.

I looked at Wang Ruoxi. The person she had secretly loved no longer remembered her; it truly was a painful thing.

After wiping away her tears, I asked, “Do you still want to keep loving him?”

“Yes, of course. I’ll never marry anyone but him in this life.”

Wang Ruoxi wiped her eyes, her gaze resolute.

“Then that settles it. Since you still love him, pursue him. Find a way to make him remember you. If he can’t, then make him get to know you all over again. You won’t give up anyway, will you?”

After hearing me, Wang Ruoxi’s eyes lit up at once. “Sister Xiaoyu, you’re right. I’ll make him get to know me again.”

Seeing that she had come around, I felt happy as well. I then asked what she had meant earlier when she said Fu Yunchen had yelled at her and been harsh with her.

Wang Ruoxi gave an embarrassed smile and rubbed her forehead. “He didn’t really yell at me or anything. He just kept a stern face the whole time and looked so fierce. When I tried to talk to him, he told me to stay away from him.”

“Why do you like him?”

At the mention of this, Wang Ruoxi’s face flushed for a moment. She was a simple girl and told me everything honestly.

She had known Fu Yunchen since childhood. He had promised to marry her, but she went abroad during high school and lost contact with him. She had only just returned to the country, and for some unknown reason, Fu Yunchen had forgotten everything.

After opening her heart to me, Wang Ruoxi seemed to like me even more. When I went into the kitchen, she insisted on helping, leaving Fu Yunshen with nothing to do when he came in afterward.

Fu Yunshen frowned unhappily. “Wang Ruoxi, are you trying to steal my girlfriend from me?”

Wang Ruoxi stuck out her tongue playfully. “I don’t care. I like Sister Xiaoyu too, so I’m going to stay right beside her.”

Fu Yunshen frowned in anger, but he endured it until dinner was over. He then called the Wang family. Only after Wang Ruoxi was picked up did his expression finally relax.

Now that the nuisance was gone, Fu Yunshen was finally in a better mood. He hurried to speak to me. “Xiaoyu, did you decorate all of this?”

His gaze swept over the walls, the flowers on the coffee table, and the carpet spread across the floor.

I did not particularly want to talk to him. “Mm.”

“You must have been exhausted doing all this by yourself.”

I lowered my head and continued scrolling through my phone. “Not really. Ruoxi helped me.”

Fu Yunshen continued, “You decorated the house so beautifully. Is there any reward you want? I can give you whatever you like.”

At the word “reward,” I lifted my gaze from my phone and looked at him. He seemed to think I was about to name my prize, and anticipation shone in his eyes.

I said indifferently, “My reward is… stop talking to me and let me have some peace and quiet.”

Fu Yunshen frowned. “That won’t do. Pick something else.”

I was being stubborn. “That’s the one I want.”

The light in Fu Yunshen’s eyes dimmed. He was angry now. Leaning back against the sofa, he stared at me without moving or saying a word.

The room fell silent. I continued scrolling through videos on my own, and when I came across something funny, I even laughed aloud.

When Fu Yunshen saw me laughing, he quietly edged closer and glanced at my phone. The moment I sensed his gaze, I looked at him warily, but he acted as though nothing had happened.

As soon as I lowered my head, he leaned over again. I simply stood up and went upstairs to my room.

Fu Yunshen sat alone on the sofa, forlornly staring at the staircase. He muttered, “I know I was wrong, but it’s really hard not being able to have any…”

The next morning, I had just stepped out of my room when I happened to run into Fu Yunshen. Wearing pink rabbit pajamas, I greeted him with a polite yet awkward smile.

“Good morning, President Fu. I’m off to slave away for you and make breakfast!”

Before Fu Yunshen could reply, I went downstairs.

The hand he had raised remained suspended in midair. He had not even managed to say the word “morning.”

Although I did not feel like speaking to Fu Yunshen, I still put effort into making breakfast. After all, I had to eat too.

Once two bowls of egg noodles were on the table, I glanced at Fu Yunshen, who was already dressed. Today he wore a dark brown suit that made his skin look even paler. After only a few seconds, I quickly looked away.

“President Fu, breakfast is ready.”

Usually, I called him by his full name. Calling him “President Fu” today made it clear that our relationship had fallen a thousand miles. Fu Yunshen felt uncomfortable, but said nothing.

As I ate my noodles, I peeled a clove of garlic and bit into it. Fu Yunshen stared at me in shock. Thinking he disliked the smell of garlic, I moved my chair to the other side of the table, putting as much distance between us as possible.

After finishing my noodles, I glanced at him. “President Fu, I’m done eating. I’m going upstairs to change.”

I sounded as though I were reporting to a superior, except I turned and left before my superior could respond.

After I disappeared at the top of the stairs, Fu Yunshen looked at the remaining clove of garlic on the table. He reached for it, peeled it the way I had, took a bite of noodles, and then bit into the garlic.

By the time I came downstairs, the table had already been cleared. Perfect. It saved me the trouble of cleaning up.

Seeing that I was still wearing yesterday’s tracksuit, Fu Yunshen asked in confusion, “Didn’t you say you were going to wear the professional clothes you bought?”

I replied, “I didn’t like them, so I threw them away.”

Fu Yunshen’s eyes darkened, and he said nothing more. On the way to the company, Fang Yanzhou sensed that something was wrong and tried several times to liven up the atmosphere, but each attempt was met with deathly silence. In the end, he stopped speaking too.

After we arrived at the office, I looked at Fu Yunshen. “President Fu, what are my tasks today?”

“Nothing for now. Take a break.”

How could anyone be unhappy when their boss gave them the day off? I returned to my desk, put on my headphones, and happily continued the drama I had failed to finish watching the day before.

Fu Yunshen looked up at me several times, but I was completely absorbed in the show and noticed nothing.

Just as I was nearing the finale, someone knocked on my desk. I took off my headphones and looked at Fu Yunshen.

“President Fu, what can I do for you?”

“I’m going back to the old residence for a while. You stay here. If anything comes up, ask Fang Yanzhou.”

I nodded. “All right.”

When I did not ask anything further, Fu Yunshen felt strangely empty inside. But what had happened last time had taught him a lesson. It was too dangerous to take me with him.

After Fu Yunshen left, I continued watching my drama, completely engrossed.

Meanwhile, the moment Fu Yunshen arrived at the old residence, he saw that the main house’s living room was packed with people. Wang Ruoxi was there as well, tear marks still visible on her face. She must have been crying before he arrived.

Before coming, he had made a rough inquiry. The Wang family refused to change the person involved in the arranged marriage, so Wang Ruoxi had gone to Old Master Fu. Old Master Fu had refused as well and called the Wang family, who then sent people over.

“Yunshen, you’re here!”

When Wang Dongliang saw Fu Yunshen, an approving look appeared on his face, and even his tone became gentler.

Fu Yunshen responded politely, “Uncle Wang.”

The sight stung Fu Yunchen. He could not forget the contempt in Wang Dongliang’s eyes when the man had looked at him moments earlier—as though he were a stray dog on the street.

A vicious glint flashed through his eyes and vanished. One day, every one of them would pay the price they deserved.

The chill on Old Master Fu’s face also softened somewhat the moment he saw Fu Yunshen appear.

“Yunshen, your Uncle Wang and I were just discussing your marriage to Ruoxi. What do you think about registering the marriage and holding the wedding directly?”
