Underground parking garage.
After getting out of the car, Chu Yifan called Qin Wan'er as he walked. “Baby, I’m not coming home tonight. You and our son should—”
Before he could finish the word “I,” everything before his eyes went black. Someone had thrown a sack over his head.
A barrage of fists came crashing down. Struggling, he shouted, “What are you doing? Who are you?”
Ling Siye and his bodyguard, He Wen, pinned Chu Yifan down and beat him mercilessly.
Ling Siye had no need to get personally involved in something as crude as beating a man. Nor did he have any desire to do so.
But when he thought of the grievances Shi Yi had suffered in the Chu family, of Chu Yifan’s earlier deceit, and of how Chu Yifan had taken her for granted after obtaining her—
The woman he had wanted to cherish above all others had actually been treated so cruelly by this man!?
Ling Siye could no longer suppress the fury raging in his heart.
Chu Yifan’s screams rang out without end. He had no strength to fight back and could do nothing but endure the beating.
“Stop…”
“Do you know who I am? I’m Chu Yifan, general manager of the Chu Group! How dare you hit me…”
Ling Siye let out a cold laugh, loosened his tie, and raised a hand in a gesture for them to stop.
He Wen halted, iron rod in hand, his eyes narrowing slightly…
When Chu Yifan heard the silence, he assumed that he had frightened them.
The next second, an iron rod as thick as an arm slammed viciously into his lower leg.
“Ahhh!”
His hysterical screams echoed through the parking garage for a long time.
…
Chu Yifan was beaten so badly that he had to be taken to the hospital on a stretcher.
His entire body was covered in injuries. What infuriated him most was that he had no idea who had attacked him.
The place had been outside the range of the security cameras.
He could not uncover even the slightest clue about his assailant. In addition to the pain wracking his body, his rage had caused internal injuries, and he had nearly vomited blood and died.
Qin Wan'er remained by his hospital bed, sobbing. “Yifan, how are you?”
Chu Yifan grimaced in pain. “Wan'er, you’re pregnant. Don’t cry.”
Thinking of Shi Yi’s attitude that morning, Qin Wan'er grew increasingly uneasy. She deliberately planted a suspicion in his mind. “Could it have been… could it have been Shi Yi who hired someone to do this? When she saw that I was carrying your child, she became consumed by jealousy?”
Chu Yifan looked somewhat dazed. “She… she loves me so much. She wouldn’t have gone that far, would she!?”
Qin Wan'er fell silent. She had originally hoped to drive Shi Yi out of the family and become the Chu family’s legitimate young mistress.
Shi Yi.
She silently savored the name. At first, she had envied Shi Yi for being the daughter of the prestigious Shi family. Later, when she learned that Shi Yi was merely a counterfeit heiress, she had finally felt a little more balanced.
But now she had heard that the Chu family was trapped in a financial crisis, that the Chu Group was facing bankruptcy, and that they had borrowed a considerable amount from loan sharks.
She had pinned her hopes on reaching a partnership with the Ling Corporation at Old Master Ling’s birthday banquet, only for that wretched Shi Yi to ruin everything once again.
Qin Wan'er did not want to be tied to the sinking ship of the Chu family because of the child in her belly.
She was still young and beautiful. She could easily find a man richer and more powerful than Chu Yifan. Once a woman had a child, however, remarrying became much more difficult.
A thought suddenly occurred to her. If all else failed, she could secretly get rid of the child without anyone knowing. Better still, she could frame that wretched Shi Yi for it.
At that moment, Song Yashi pushed open the door and entered. She walked to the bedside and patted Chu Yifan on the shoulder. “Son, what happened? Did you see who attacked you?”
Chu Yifan lowered his eyes mournfully, his voice trembling with tears. “Mom, my whole body hurts.”
Song Yashi’s eyes reddened as she comforted him. “My poor boy, Mom will have this investigated to the very end. I’ll find out who did this and avenge you.”
Chu Yifan looked at her, tears glistening in his eyes. In a weak, pitiful voice, he said, “Mom, I was in the underground parking garage when someone pinned me down and beat me. Who did I offend to deserve this?”
“My poor son! That murderous bastard—I’ll drag him out no matter what and make him pay for what he did…”
Song Yashi covered her mouth and began to sob.
“Auntie, Yifan has suffered such terrible injuries, yet Shi Yi hasn’t even come to see him…”
Qin Wan'er’s eyes brimmed with tears as she squeezed out a few more, looking meek and fragile.
Chu Yifan picked up a handkerchief and carefully wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. His movements were so gentle that he seemed to be polishing the most precious porcelain.
“Wan'er, stop crying. If only that woman Shi Yi were even one ten-thousandth as understanding as you…”
Chu Yifan gritted his teeth and turned to Song Yashi. “Mom, I’ve had enough of that woman. I want a divorce. I want to marry Wan'er.”
“Don’t be foolish.” Song Yashi’s expression darkened. “Didn’t you see what happened today? That woman deliberately humiliated you in front of the Ling family. If you really divorce her, who in our circle will still do business with the Chu family? She’s simply jealous. Just coax her a little and everything will be fine.”
“But, Mom…” Chu Yifan began.
“Enough. I’m calling that woman Shi Yi right now. I’ll tell her that you were beaten and are in the hospital, and ask her to make you some soup and bring it over. I’ll send her a picture so she can see how badly my son has been hurt. No matter how jealous she is, she’ll come running.”
Song Yashi picked up her phone, snapped a picture of Chu Yifan, and rose to leave the ward.
Qin Wan'er stared at Chu Yifan with tear-filled eyes.
It felt as though a fish bone were lodged in her throat, making it unbearably difficult to breathe.

Elsewhere.
After considerable effort, Shi Yi finally managed to find a taxi back to the villa in Phoenix City.
She had barely opened the door and had not even changed her shoes when her phone rang.
She picked it up and saw that Song Yashi was calling.
With a swipe of her finger, she answered.
Song Yashi spoke with forced patience. “Yiyi, it’s Mom. Yifan was badly beaten and is in the hospital. Hurry and make him some soup to bring over. The poor child…”
Shi Yi laughed. “He was beaten because he deserved it. What does that have to do with me?”
“What kind of thing is that to say? He’s your husband! Stop wasting time. Get here at once. If you’re not here within an hour, I’ll have Yifan divorce you.” Song Yashi’s expression darkened immediately.
Did she really think Song Yashi could not control this little wretch? How dare she act so arrogantly!?
Beep, beep, beep—
Before Shi Yi could reply, the call was disconnected. A moment later, a photograph arrived on her phone.
She opened it and thought she was looking at a ghost. She nearly flung the phone across the room.
This contraption called a phone was truly strange. She took another look at the photograph, clutched her stomach, and burst into uncontrollable laughter.
Chu Yifan’s entire body was wrapped in bandages. His broken limbs were encased in thick plaster, and only a pair of hateful eyes showed through his bandaged face.
At first glance, he looked exactly like a mummy.
Who had beaten that scumbag Chu Yifan!?
It really proved the old saying: those who commit too many injustices will bring about their own destruction.
…
After washing up, Shi Yi was preparing to rest.
The moment she lay down, a gust of night wind suddenly swept in from the balcony, carrying with it the faint scent of a man.
She sprang upright like a carp leaping from the water and stared warily toward the balcony. “Who goes there?”
Under the light of the moon, the man’s handsome, heroic features gradually emerged from the darkness.
Shi Yi rolled her eyes at him and said fiercely, “Anyone who likes sneaking through windows in the middle of the night is obviously no good.”
