Chapter Ninety-Three: The Unlucky Gu Yun
The great toad wandered around the courtyard for quite some time before finally deciding in the simplest, most ruthless way possible.
“All right, this courtyard it is.”
With that, it turned and hopped into a neighboring yard from the side.
Gou Yun lay on the roof of the courtyard house, a blade of grass clenched between his teeth as he fondly thought of Gou Li, far away. He had come here specifically to protect Fu Bao.
The master had said that if the task was done well, there would be a reward.
Gou Li: No. Don’t come back.
“Ah, how tragic! I, a mighty hunter, have suffered failure time and again. I finally caught a ginseng spirit, only for it to escape. Alas, how pitiable, how pitiable!” Gou Yun lamented from the rooftop, sighing over life’s sorrows.
A croaking sound rose from the courtyard below. Gou Yun’s ears sprang upright at once.
What was that? Hm? Demonic energy!
His spirits instantly surged. Ha! Something to do at last.
“In a place like this, how is there not a single person? Is that chubby little fellow living so miserably?” The great toad hopped along, glancing left and right.
“What are you looking for, little frog?”
A hateful voice came from behind.
The great toad froze. Little frog? Who are you calling little frog?
It turned mid-hop and saw Gou Yun behind it. Just a mortal.
“Who are you to block my path? You’re tired of living!”
“A celestial being? You?” Gou Yun nearly gagged.
“Hmph! I have cultivated for hundreds of years. You little mortal had best get out of my way, unless you want me to eat you!”
“Oh, then go ahead and eat me.”
The great toad was speechless.
After a long while—
“Little frog, you’re still young and don’t understand how hard this world can be. You’re far too naive.” Gou Yun found the two tiny nostrils above the toad’s bound mouth with precision and tickled them with the dogtail grass.
By now, the great toad had been firmly trussed up by the paws and hung from the osmanthus tree in the courtyard.
And honestly, why did Gou Yun always tie things up like this? Had he once been a butcher or something?
“Heh heh. Today I’m going to take you down and see whether you still dare to go around causing trouble!” Gou Yun pulled out a scrap of burlap and was just about to cover the toad’s head when a muffled pop sounded, and a vile, indescribable stench spread at incredible speed.
Gou Yun: Ugh—want to puke!
In the end, the great toad escaped, while Gou Yun was poisoned senseless. The next day he was found by the Han household servants and rushed to a clinic for emergency treatment.
Great toad: As if a century of cultivation had been for nothing.
“Brother Zi Xuan, what do you think happened to the big guy? Why does his face look so yellow? It feels like he was choked by something awful.” Fu Bao had gone to the clinic with Han Zi Xuan, but the big fellow’s complexion looked terribly strange.
“Uh... that doesn’t look like poisoning. It looks more like he was stunned senseless by some horribly foul smell.”
“Wow—there’s actually a weapon that powerful? It even knocked the big guy out!”
“There probably is.”
“Poor big guy. How he suffered!”
Fu Bao placed Gou Yun’s hand on his belly, crossed his own hands, and arranged everything neatly, expressing his grief.
Han Zi Xuan: He’s not dead yet.
The unconscious Gou Yun: “...”
“Seriously, could you not be so dramatic? This guy was only knocked out by a fart. Why are you in such a hurry?”
At that moment, the little ginseng spirit in Fu Bao’s jade pendant spoke in gleeful amusement.
Ha! He was actually knocked out by a fart. This ginseng is going to laugh itself to death!
Fu Bao: “...”
“Do you know what that miasma in the residence last time was?” After laughing enough, the little ginseng spirit asked.
“Wasn’t it just spat out by that toad?” Fu Bao asked in puzzlement.
