After traveling all afternoon, the group entered the forest, intending to rest. Fubao was the first to volunteer to keep watch; everyone else would eat after she finished. No one objected—Gu Yun was not present, and it was safer not to have just one person on guard. Only Gu Li stroked his chin thoughtfully, remaining silent.

As for the evening meal, the Chen family’s young lady, faced with nothing but dry cakes, pouted and poked at the fire with a stick. Sigh! If only I had brought some meat or something! At least the first meal wouldn’t have to be these hard crackers!

“Cousin, why aren’t you eating?” Gong Shaoyu munched on his rations, noticing that his cousin hadn’t touched a bite since the start. That wouldn’t do.

“Don’t worry about me, cousin! I’m not hungry yet,” Gu Li replied, rearranging the firewood.

“You’d better eat something. We have to travel again early tomorrow!”

“Mm.”

“Fubao! I don’t want to eat this. I really want some meat,” the Chen family young lady whimpered, clutching her dry cake.

“Eh? Why did you bring dry cakes?”

“What else would I bring? The storybook said that young travelers eat dry cakes while living in the wild, didn’t it?”

“So that’s why you packed only that?”

“Yes!”

“Eh, where’s your rations? I haven’t seen you eat anything,” the Chen family young lady suddenly realized that the girl hadn’t eaten at all.

“Are you all full?” Fubao asked, turning around.

Gu Li said nothing, while Gong Shaoyu took a sip of water and said, “Yes, we’re full.”

“All right then! Those who have eaten well should keep watch first.” Fubao handed a large torch to Gong Shaoyu and then pulled out a thoroughly cleaned chicken from her large pack.

She placed it over the fire to roast, turning it occasionally and sprinkling some seasoning. Soon, a delicious aroma filled the air.

Gong Shaoyu thought, “I’ve been gnawing on dry cakes all this time!”

Gu Li smirked knowingly.

The Chen family young lady said, “This is quite well prepared!”

So, poor Gong Shaoyu was left alone holding the big torch, keeping watch—too unfair.

“This is so delicious! Fubao, you’re amazing for bringing so many good things!” The Chen family young lady rubbed her belly and lay on the ground.

“Of course! I’ve been planning this for a long time!” Fubao said proudly.

Gu Li ate a little, shaking his head at the girl’s nature.

The four had eaten their fill and were experiencing the wilderness alone for the first time. The only hunter among them, Gu Yun, had gone out hunting to be helpful. They thus failed to notice anything unusual nearby.

Suddenly, some “friends” appeared in the trees without them realizing.

“Woof! Woof!” Big Black sensed something amiss and began barking loudly.

“Ah! How many humans are there?” a voice whispered.

“How do we split them?”

“You two, me two.”

“You mean those two big ones?”

“Yes.”

“No way.”

“Each with one big and one small.”

“Well…”

...

Fubao heard the noises in the trees. Something was up there?

“小 Black, come here!” Fubao pulled Big Black over.

“Woof woof! They’re in the trees!”

“Bao’er, what’s wrong?” Gu Li noticed Fubao’s unease.

“It seems there’s something else here!” Fubao said.

“Fubao, don’t scare me!” The Chen family young lady suddenly darted behind Gong Shaoyu, who was sturdier.

Gong Shaoyu was speechless.

When Gu Yun returned, carrying two mountain chickens, Fubao and the others had already endured a fierce battle. They looked at the small cart piled high with tightly trapped mountain chickens.

Gu Yun was speechless. “What on earth happened?”

Later it was discovered that Fubao had packed a large bag of rice in her pack. When she took out the chicken meat, some wild chickens nearby caught sight of it. These chickens, unfamiliar with city rice, decided to gang up on her in numbers. But they were caught in a trap instead.

Who the hell uses a broken bamboo basket to catch chickens? And the chickens were still crawling inside!

In the end, Gu Yun ate the two hunted chickens to calm down.

Damn it! After all my hard work hunting, I only got two chickens. And who brings rice on a trip?

They met Gong Shaoyu’s master at a tavern in Yu County.

Well, it was because they were caught for dining and dashing and sent to wash dishes.

Upon meeting, the master and disciple poured out their woes in tears. Honestly, they were quite suited to be teacher and student!
