Chapter 114: A Bowl of Egg Fried Rice in the Dead of Night (I have some matters to attend to today, so I owe one chapter, which I will make up tomorrow.)
Back in the classroom, Qin Lin’er leaned against Qin Xuan, enjoying the strawberry-flavored lollipop she had just bought from the school store—deliciously sweet!
“Qin Xuan? You have to come play with me this weekend!” Qin Lin’er shook her head playfully before lightly tapping Qin Xuan’s shoulder.
“Alright, what do you want to do?” Qin Xuan reached out to ruffle her hair, messing it up in the process.
“Annoying!” Qin Lin’er pouted, swatting his hand away. “You’ll find out soon enough!”
Though she hadn’t fully decided yet, Qin Lin’er already had plans brewing for the weekend—whatever it took.
The dull afternoon finally ended. After Qin Xuan cooked dinner for the two of them at home, he headed back to school for his elective class. Unfortunately, Nan Zhiyi was busy tonight and couldn’t join him, so Qin Xuan sat alone in a corner, chatting with them in the group chat.
When the old professor arrived, clutching several books, he was a little surprised to see Qin Xuan alone. “Why no showing off today?”
Rarely was there a day free from distractions; the professor’s lecture flowed smoothly from start to the ringing of the dismissal bell, seamless and uninterrupted.
As soon as class ended, Qin Xuan grabbed his backpack and dashed out quickly.
The old professor, carrying his books, slowly stepped outside and caught sight of Qin Xuan and Nan Zhiyi embracing, with Nan Zhiyi planting a kiss on Qin Xuan’s cheek.
Well then! Don’t expect to take my class next semester! Always showing off like that—haven’t you noticed those strange looks from the other students?
Qin Xuan and Nan Zhiyi lingered for a moment before walking off arm in arm.
“Will you be busy for a while?” Outside the school, Qin Xuan glanced at the weary Nan Zhiyi and asked curiously.
Nan Zhiyi sighed helplessly, looking pitifully at Qin Xuan. “Yeah, there’s an event downtown I have to host—so annoying!”
“Thanks for your hard work...” Qin Xuan squeezed her small hand firmly.
Nan Zhiyi smiled at him and opened her arms. “Then how about you carry me back?”
Seeing her like that, Qin Xuan nodded and crouched down in front of her.
Nan Zhiyi giggled as she leaned onto his back. Why did this make her feel so at ease?
Qin Xuan lifted her, noticing her weight was still manageable—no trouble at all.
“Let’s go!” Nan Zhiyi wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, whispering in his ear like a knight.
Qin Xuan felt a tickle as her breath brushed against his ear. “At your command!”
Back in the room, Nan Zhiyi stubbornly stayed on his back, refusing to get down until she noticed the two others on the sofa giving her a disapproving look. Only then did she jump off.
“Well, Sis Xi, I’m going to bed!” Nan Zhiyi gave Qin Xuan a gentle push and then slipped into her slippers, heading to her room.
---
The moment she reached her room, Nan Zhiyi collapsed onto the bed—still hadn’t eaten anything. She patted her stomach helplessly.
She’d spent most of the day in meetings and missed lunch because she wanted to wait outside the classroom for Qin Xuan. No chance to eat at all.
Finally, after eleven o’clock, the noise outside died down. She opened the door and went to the kitchen, opening the fridge to find something to eat.
Inside, half a cake caught her eye—it seemed to be Lin’er’s. Nan Zhiyi’s eyes lit up as she took a small bite. Not bad at all!
She was enjoying it when she didn’t notice someone standing behind her.
“Zhiyi!” Qin Lin’er had come to get her leftover cake, only to find Nan Zhiyi sneaking a bite!
“Hm?” Nan Zhiyi turned around, a bit of cream still lingering at the corner of her mouth.
“You’re stealing my cake!” Lin’er scolded, looking indignant as she eyed the cake in Nan Zhiyi’s hand.
Nan Zhiyi awkwardly wiped her mouth and explained, “How’s this stealing? I was hungry. Shouldn’t you give me something to eat?”
“Zhiyi, you’re hungry? Didn’t eat dinner?” Lin’er was surprised and curious.
“Not just dinner—lunch too... I’m starving!” Nan Zhiyi felt a little wronged. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have asked Qin Xuan to carry her; she was genuinely too hungry to move.
“Oh, well, then eat up,” Lin’er waved her hand. “Want Qin Xuan to cook something for you?”
“No, no, it’s so late already,” Nan Zhiyi took another bite of the cake and shook her head when Lin’er mentioned Qin Xuan.
At that moment, Qin Xuan’s door suddenly opened. He peeked out and saw the two in the kitchen. He had faintly heard some noise earlier—it was indeed them.
“What are you two doing?” Qin Xuan stepped closer, noticing Nan Zhiyi hiding the cake behind her back. Curious.
“N-nothing! You should go back to sleep!” Nan Zhiyi quickly hid the cake, not wanting Qin Xuan to know.
Lin’er looked puzzled. With her personality, if she were that hungry and couldn’t sleep, she’d insist her brother make her some food—her favorite was always a late-night bowl of egg fried rice!
“Zhiyi didn’t eat! Missed two meals...” Lin’er said softly to Qin Xuan. “What kind of boyfriend are you not knowing this?”
“Hm? You didn’t eat?” Qin Xuan looked at Nan Zhiyi and noticed the cream marks on her mouth. He couldn’t help but reach out to wipe it away.
“Are you silly? Why didn’t you tell me?” He pulled her into his arms and held her for a moment before letting go.
Seeing there was no leftover food in the fridge, only some rice, Qin Xuan grabbed two eggs and decided to make egg fried rice.
“I’m actually fine... just some cake is enough,” Nan Zhiyi said, watching Qin Xuan’s movements.
“He often gets up at night to cook for me—I’m used to it!” Lin’er patted Nan Zhiyi’s shoulder and then grabbed a bottle of milk before heading back to her room.
---
Qin Xuan focused on cooking the egg fried rice without saying a word. Nan Zhiyi thought he might be upset and quietly ate her cake at the side.
Soon, Qin Xuan sat across from her with a large bowl of egg fried rice.
Nan Zhiyi frowned at the huge bowl, larger than her face. “Qin Xuan, that’s too much. I can’t finish it…”
“You have to eat! Missing two meals, what’s this?” Qin Xuan replied, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
Nan Zhiyi sensed his displeasure, took a spoonful, and immediately smiled with satisfaction.
“It’s delicious! Thank you, Qin Xuan!” She happily ate spoonful after spoonful, her cheeks puffed out.
Seeing her praise, Qin Xuan finally relaxed a little.
“Next time, you’re not allowed to hide it from me if you don’t eat,” Qin Xuan said, passing her a glass of water. “What if you get really sick from hunger?”
“Mm-hmm!” Nan Zhiyi nodded eagerly, finally swallowing the egg fried rice.
She had worried that since they hadn’t been together long, asking Qin Xuan to do things might make her seem troublesome...
But what she didn’t know was that Qin Xuan loved the feeling of feeding them and seeing their contentment.
Nan Zhiyi ate more than half before she simply couldn’t eat any more—her stomach was full to bursting.
“Qin Xuan, I can’t eat anymore,” she said, putting down her spoon and pushing the bowl toward him. It was a rare occasion for her to eat so much.
Qin Xuan handed her a napkin to wipe her mouth, picked up the spoon, and finished the egg fried rice in just a few bites.
“All done. Eat well, then wash up and get some sleep,” Qin Xuan said as he stood, carrying the bowl toward the kitchen.
Glancing back at Nan Zhiyi, he saw her sitting still, pouting with her chin raised. Understanding, he bent down and kissed her on the lips.
“Hey! You didn’t wipe your mouth!” Nan Zhiyi complained after the kiss, dabbing at her lips.
Qin Xuan was left speechless, thinking, You have the nerve to complain!
