Chapter 31 An Opponent Whose Every Thought Shows on Their Face
Fine, she admitted that at this moment she was somewhat on the verge of losing control. She needed to calm down, or else she just might hit someone!
Someone had jumped off the carriage, yet that big water buffalo stopped at once, bellowing as if waiting for someone to get back on before moving again.
Qin Youtian hurriedly leapt down and caught hold of Hua Qinci, who had almost lost her balance. “Are you alright? Why did you suddenly jump off? Do you know how dangerous that is?”
Seeing Hua Qinci’s actions, it was obvious to him that she didn’t know martial arts. Although Qin Youtian couldn’t quite figure out why she had changed so much from how she’d been before, he thought perhaps it was true what people said—that a woman changes after she marries.
Noticing that he seemed genuinely concerned about her, Hua Qinci felt a little more at ease. Still, she kept her face cold and shook off his hand. “I’m fine. Go look after your cousin!”
Even if she didn’t voice the next sentence, Qin Youtian could already see the refusal in her eyes.
He frowned in helplessness. All his life, he’d never known how to handle such matters. Killing, arson, facing down an enemy army alone—none of that frightened him. But when it came to women, he never had a clue.
Just then, Liu Bingbing, who’d been shoved hard by Qin Youtian earlier and had bumped against the side of the carriage, was now rubbing her head in annoyance.
“Cousin, why did you push so hard? My head’s got a huge bump now, it hurts so much!”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to.” Qin Youtian was embarrassed. One woman was already enough to give him a headache; now with two, and another at home even more impossible to resist, he was at his wits’ end.
As Hua Qinci walked on, she sneaked a glance at Qin Youtian. Seeing his somewhat goofy look, she suddenly found it hard not to laugh.
“My dear wife, let me help you. Be careful—this one can be fierce.”
Noticing the smile on Hua Qinci’s face, Qin Youtian hurried over and took the buffalo by the lead.
“Who are you calling your wife? Don’t go around saying that!” Hua Qinci brushed the dust from her clothes and strode forward.
Qin Youtian led the buffalo and followed close behind. “Qinci, wait for me! My wife? My wife! Slow down!”
With Qin Youtian slowed by the buffalo, Hua Qinci, in her suddenly good spirits, quickened her pace.
After a while, Liu Bingbing got off the carriage as well and followed behind Qin Youtian.
Thus the three of them chased and followed one another into the city.
After a long silence, it was Liu Bingbing who grew restless first and broke the ice. “Sister-in-law, that thing of yours—Doctor Li said it was fake, but do you really think you can use it to cheat…”
Seeing the look on Hua Qinci’s face, Liu Bingbing quickly changed her words. “I mean, do you really think you can exchange it for a thousand taels of silver?”
Hua Qinci shot her a glare. She really couldn’t figure Liu Bingbing out. Hadn’t she just tried to harm her earlier? Made a complete fool of her, even got her nose battered and bruised. By all rights, shouldn’t she hate her? In fact, she had always hated her and even wished her dead. But the wounds were still fresh, and yet her attitude had shifted so quickly.
“A solution may be set in stone, but aren’t people alive? If you can change so fast, why can’t that thing be exchanged for silver?”
“Oh, I see! Cousin, cousin-in-law is here to cheat people in the city! Looks like we’re in for hard times ahead!”
As she spoke, Liu Bingbing sidled up to Hua Qinci. “Cousin-in-law, are you going to try the same trick again? Don’t say I didn’t warn you—this is the city, not a bunch of ignorant peasants in the countryside! If you get caught, you could end up in jail, or worse, lose your head. But don’t worry, I’ll take good care of cousin and aunt. You just go ahead and do what you must!”
Reminded by Liu Bingbing’s words, Hua Qinci stopped searching with her eyes and turned to look at the seemingly naïve Liu Bingbing. She truly couldn’t understand why such a fool of an opponent could make her so wary, always keeping a part of her attention on her.
“Don’t worry. At the very least, I won’t be foolish enough to think like an idiot.”
