Chapter 139: I Must Have a Drink with Every Single One of You
Gu Suiyi drove back to her small apartment in a daze.
She had no recollection of how she managed to wake An Wan up and get her into the guest bedroom bed, nor did she remember how she herself had ended up under the covers.
The room was dimly lit. The duvet was pulled up tightly to the bridge of her nose, leaving only her almond-shaped eyes exposed. Staring blankly at the white ceiling, her mind was an absolute mess as she tried to process Tang Qingning's words.
Her thoughts were in complete disarray, and she only managed to drift into a hazy, restless sleep in the small hours of the night.
The next day.
Early morning sunlight streamed through the curtains into the bedroom. An Wan, sleeping in the guest room, blinked and looked around the space that was both familiar and somewhat unfamiliar.
Pushing herself up from the bed, a throbbing headache reminded her of the previous night's heavy drinking.
Knowing she would feel like this, she shouldn't have indulged so much. In yesterday's setting, she had simply gotten too carried away.
Taking in the surroundings, she thought, *Ah, this must be Suiyi's guest room.*
Gradually, her memories returned. An Wan recalled asking Suiyi to bring her here to stay the night.
Vaguely, a troubling realization began to dawn on her—hadn't she blurted something out while dead drunk yesterday?
"Suiyi, you're pregnant. Have you gone to the hospital for a prenatal checkup yet? I yesterday..."
It felt like a bolt from the blue. An Wan suddenly remembered telling Suiyi in the car to make sure she went for her prenatal checkup.
No, no, no. That wasn't the main issue. The crucial point was that Qingning had also been in the car. Suiyi had wanted to keep her pregnancy a secret from others, and she had no idea whether "others" included Qingning.
An Wan reached up and lightly slapped her own mouth. "Serves you right for letting alcohol ruin things."
She hurriedly opened the guest room door and rushed out.
"Aunt An Wan."
Qin Manman emerged from the kitchen, wearing a tiny apron tied around her small waist, carefully holding two freshly fried sunny-side-up eggs in her little hands.
Having gone to bed early the night before, she had already been asleep when Gu Suiyi and An Wan returned, so she looked somewhat surprised to see An Wan here in the morning.
"Manman, you haven't gone to school yet?" Today wasn't the weekend; Manman should have been heading to class.
"In half an hour. I got up early to make breakfast for Mommy," Manman replied obediently. "Mommy isn't awake yet, right? Aunt An Wan, could you please go wake Mommy up? I need to fry another egg."
Not expecting an extra person for breakfast, Manman had only prepared portions for herself and Gu Suiyi.
"Alright," An Wan nodded. Looking at Manman's sweet, well-behaved appearance, she sighed with the realization that Suiyi had raised a truly wonderful daughter.
That made her think of the one Suiyi was currently carrying.
Would the baby be a boy or a girl? When it grew up, would it be just as sensible and well-behaved as Manman?
*Stop, stop. Let your imagination run wild.*
Suiyi hadn't even decided whether she wanted to keep that baby yet.
Besides, her loose tongue yesterday had let Qingning in on the pregnancy secret. She had no idea if Suiyi was furious with her.
She needed to go and offer a humble apology.
An Wan walked over to the master bedroom.
She raised her hand and knocked on the door.
No sound came from inside.
Wasn't Suiyi up yet? Frowning slightly, An Wan knocked again, calling out in a soft voice, "Suiyi? Suiyi, are you awake?"
Still, there was no movement from within.
"Suiyi!" An Wan raised her voice a fraction. Unable to resist, she turned the door handle. Gu Suiyi's bedroom door wasn't locked; with a gentle twist, it clicked open.
The figure on the bed was motionless, buried deep beneath a tightly pulled duvet that formed a small mound.
A wave of panic surged through An Wan. Suddenly gripped by a nameless dread, she rushed forward and yanked the covers off Gu Suiyi. "Suiyi, Suiyi, wake up!"
She needed to make sure Suiyi was safe and sound.
"Stop making a fuss..." Gu Suiyi's eyes remained closed, her delicate brows knitted tightly together. She slowly opened her almond-shaped eyes, looking heavy with sleep. "An Wan? What is it?"
"You scared me to death." An Wan's suspended heart finally dropped back into place. For a moment, she had feared that seeing the older man together with Gu Yuman yesterday might have driven Suiyi to do something desperate.
Plumping herself down onto the edge of the bed, An Wan looked at Suiyi, who was just sitting up, and complained, "I called you so many times, why didn't you answer?"
Gu Suiyi rubbed her eyes and murmured, "I went to sleep too late last night, couldn't really get up."
"Why were you staying up late?" An Wan's mother-hen instincts flared up again as she began to nag, "You have a baby inside you now—you're eating for two. Staying up late means the baby is staying up late. For the sake of the little one in your belly, you need to eat well, drink well, sleep well, and get proper exercise. Understand?"
Gu Suiyi remained silent.
Suddenly remembering that she was supposed to be playing the role of a penitent sinner offering an apology, An Wan hesitated and said, "Suiyi, I was drunk yesterday. You told me not to let anyone know about your pregnancy, but since I slipped up like that, Qingning knows now. It's... it's fine, right?"
At the mention of Tang Qingning, Gu Suiyi's expression shifted slightly.
Every subtle change on her face was caught by An Wan, who immediately assumed Suiyi was angry. An Wan rushed to apologize, "Suiyi, I didn't mean to, I'm so sorry! I promised you I wouldn't say anything, but once I have too much to drink, I just can't keep my mouth shut..."
"An Wan, it's fine."
Just as An Wan was anxiously pouring out apologies and explanations, Gu Suiyi softly interrupted her.
"Ah?" Suiyi wasn't mad?
An Wan looked at Gu Suiyi in confusion. She had clearly seen Suiyi's expression sour for a moment. Tentatively, she asked, "You're not angry with me?"
"No, I'm not mad at you."
An Wan let out a long sigh of relief. She had genuinely been afraid that Suiyi would hate her. She had promised to keep a secret, yet the secret had leaked precisely because of her; Suiyi would have been completely justified in losing her temper.
"An Wan, I want to ask you a question," Gu Suiyi said, biting her lower lip. "What if I misunderstood something before..."
She trailed off, leaving the sentence unfinished.
"Misunderstood what?" An Wan looked at her inquisitively.
Gu Suiyi had originally intended to tell An Wan what Tang Qingning had revealed about Grandpa Gu. Bearing such a heavy burden alone was agonizing, and she had longed to confide in someone and talk it through.
Yet, as the words reached the tip of her tongue, she suddenly lost the desire to speak.
Shaking her head, Gu Suiyi offered a faint, fleeting smile. "It's nothing." She slid out of the bed, her bare feet touching the cool floorboards. "Let's get up. I'll drop Manman off at school first, and then take you back to your apartment. I don't have any work scheduled for the next few days, so you can sort out your own plans."
An Wan nodded.
That meant she had a wonderfully long vacation ahead of her, with nothing to worry about except tending to her online boutique shop.
Since she had free time, she needed to push forward with manufacturing Lu Shifeng's inflatable doll. When the time came for discounts and promotions, she was going to screw him over completely!
"I'm going out to the living room then."
"Okay."
As An Wan reached the doorway, something crossed her mind. She turned back to look at Gu Suiyi and suggested, "Suiyi! You don't have anything urgent at the company today, right? After we drop Manman off at school, I'll go with you to the hospital for your prenatal checkup."
Gu Suiyi bit her lip, pondered for a moment, and whispered, "Alright."
After breakfast, Gu Suiyi dropped Qin Manman off at school and then headed straight to the hospital for the checkup.
Given Gu Suiyi's status as a public figure, visiting a public hospital was out of the question.
Instead, they chose a private hospital renowned for its exceptional discretion. Gu Suiyi geared up fully, wearing a hat and a face mask to conceal her identity.
When it came time to register at the front desk, she initially planned to use her own health insurance card, but An Wan firmly insisted on using hers instead.
"Suiyi, the privacy here is great, but just to be safe—having a prenatal checkup record on my card doesn't matter at all. If yours ever got leaked and dug up by the media, you'd be completely ruined."
An Wan was unwavering, and in the end, her insurance card was used for the registration.
With the registration complete, they sat down in the waiting area.
Seated right in front of Gu Suiyi was a young woman around her own age, perhaps even younger. With a face still full of childish innocence, her belly showed a slight, yet inconspicuous, curve. To an unknowing observer, she might simply have looked a little plump.
The girl looked terribly young, resembling a college undergraduate.
Her boyfriend sat beside her, speaking in low, comforting tones: "Babe, don't be scared. It'll be over quickly, and we can always have children later."
The girl's eyes were already red-rimmed as she nodded silently, fighting back tears.
Watching the scene unfold before her, Gu Suiyi felt a stinging sensation in her eyes, mingled with a deep sense of pity for the stranger.
That empathy felt almost visceral
